When I crashed a demo CBR 600 RR getting my knee down around a roundabout a blamed a car pulling out .
Though only because it was a company event and the CEO was paying the £500 excess .
I actually blamed it on the tyres . |

That's fair enough due to the circumstances, i'm sure most of us would do the same
I mean the general 'I just binned my bike' threads we see on here.
Like my accident i had almost 2 years ago, hit a bump mid corner which threw me into a tank slapper. The bump was deemed the cause of the accident but maybe inexperience caused me to come off (ie, not being able to recover from a tank slapper or whatnot).
But how many times do you read people blaming it on someone/something else just because they are embarassed to admit they were at fault. ____________________ It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, then it's bloody hilarious!!! |

Not disagreeing with you at all, due to all the sedatives they pumped into me i don't remember anything at all after leaving tescos that evening
From what i was told by the police, i did almost manage to hold the tank slapper but due to it being a left hand bend it put me on the wrong side of the road (with a car coming the other way). Trying to get out of his way i low sided which put me underneath the car Didn't help it was at 11:30 in the evening so cold roads and dark which made the bump harder to see. Live and learn as they say.
I agree with the 'nothing i could of done' statement aswell. Even though someone else maybe at fault (pulling out etc), i'd say atleast 75% of accidents are avoidable just by reading peoples body position, eye contact etc. If you can sense they are going to pull out then you take action before they do. I often find it's quite obvious when someone is going to pull out on your, i know sometimes these things aren't avoidable but the majority of the time, they are. ____________________ It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, then it's bloody hilarious!!! |

My general rule of thumb has always been '100% for the track, 70% for the road'. If you still come off on the road it can hardly be your fault. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

I hate bikers that say "I put her down".

I wondered wtf was going on with the guy sitting on a bench in the middle of the sandtrap, yeah. It's only when you see the bus that you start to figure it out. ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). Currently bikeless

Its got to be the safest place to test, and improve, your braking ability. I can only think of one time on the road that I felt the rear going light while braking and that was in the dry. I have no idea on my limits when braking in the wet. |
Very unlikely to get a tankslapper from braking as it’s an oscillation that develops from a light front end.
For general braking ‘practice’, I’d go for a quiet industrial estate or straight empty country road with good visibility. On a track you’ve got to worry about the upcoming corner, other bikes trying to get past you and braking sooner than you.
Any half decent tyre on a half decent bike should be able to stoppy in the dry on a reasonable surface. At around the point your rear wheels is just about to leave the ground is going to be maximum braking.
In the wet it’s going to vary even more on the surface and the tyre. I will often try a slow speed stoppy/brake test at traffic lights with no one behind me in the wet to get an idea of how much grip I have.
I recently stuck some new Diablo IIIs on my bike, first ride was a mile to the local shops in fairly heavy rain with saturated roads. On my road, pulling on the front brake fairly harshly at low speed resulted in the front sliding. By the time I got to the shops, it resulted in a stoppy at a similar speed.
It’s for this sort of situation I’d like ABS, as you can never really be 100% sure exactly how your tyre will interact with the current fairly unknown environment when it may be you’re very close to the limits of grip.
If you want to improve your ability to brake late into a corner, then the track is definitely the place to do it. However while it can be useful on the road to be able to slow significantly while leant over, it’s not a skill I’d hope to be using. |
