Now that I have a bike that requires relatively regular valve adjustment, I need to get a good approximation of the right tool.

Bike is a 1980 CB250RSA, with screw and locknut adjustment on rocker arms. The locknut is 8 or 9mm, so I have rings spanners that fit it. The problem is the tappet itself, it's about a 2mm square fitting, and I can't find any spanners that small. I may try a very small socket, but I soubt I have anything that small.

What do you guys use to hold the tiny stem when adjusting the valve clearance?

On my YBR I could hold it with my fingers (you could also try a pair of long nose pliers but it's fiddly). I eventually bought the tool for a few quid. Dunno if it will fit your engine though but it is also a square hole of a couple mm in size. Can give you the part number if you want to order it from a Yammy dealer?

Go to a proper tool shop, one where the people serving are all over 50 and wear brown coats with a ruler sticking out of their top pockets. They will sell you a little 4/5mm open ended spannerthat looks like it is made for Action Man (or whatever size it is, I'll look when I get in tonight). That's what I use on my Honda, along with a 10mm ring spanner for the locknut.

Strange size imperial box spanner has worked for me in the past, like a screw driver with a socket fitted permintaly to the end

Me and Bacon used a pair of pliers with tape on the ends to do his CB250 valves, piece of piss tbh. IIRC though there may have been a tool suggested in the manual...

Pliers work fine though with tape to prevent damage to the tappet. Thumbs Up

I used a long thin spanner that I nicked from my dad's toolbox. I think it was a spoke nipple tool for bicycles.

You might find an ignition spanner that fits :-

A Honda dealer should be able to get one for you. Mine cost about £3, a couple of years ago. It has a proper Honda part number - any competent person at the service desk should find the details for you.

Fingers for 3 of them. Needlenose for the stubborn one. Its an 8mm locknut. Will butcher a screwdriver next time. i.e 2mm slot with a 45 degree bend.

I've done a bit more googling and it seems that it's a 4mm stud, so I've ordered a 3.2/4mm combination spanner that should do it.

The problem is that it's one of those jobs that needs too many hands, seeing as the exhaust rockers have a spring forcing them down onto the valve. Should be able to get the clearances sorted properly now.

A photo in the Haynes shows a 1/8th (3.1750mm) on the adjuster nut. It isn't a good fit.
