Hi guys,

Some advice if you please

Got to work this morning and when I turned the ignition off the starter motor was still turning. This has subsequently killed the battery very quickly. It must have been turning all the way too work, but I never noticed over the sounds of the Ipod.

My friendly RAC man come and give me a bump, and has disconnected the solenoid to get me home. He also subsequently noticed that the starter switch itself (on the handlebars) appears to have caused the problem, which in turn caused the solenoid itself to fail and short. It links in with an intermittent issue I have had with the ignition fuse keep blowing.

My questions are

1. Can you replace just the starter switch from within the kill switch assembly, or do you have to replace the whole lot? If so, is this a big job (fnarr), or are they quite simple to disconnect once you get the switch out. I dont mind a bit of soldering if required, but my main concern is the throttle assembly going through the switch.
2. Would you suggest changing the solenoid as well, or is it more than likely just the switch that has shorted?

Thank you in advance

I would just take it off the bar and spray some contact cleaner on the switch. Clean all the gunk and see it it works. If not you could replace it as a unit. Its very cheap to get a hold of one i would have thought.

Contact cleaner 1st

Halfords £3 or so.

Lets hope that the starter motor is knackered too, they are only designed for short term use. I wouldnt think about that till you have the wiring issues sorted.

The starter solanoid should be fairly cheap and easy to replace and replacing it would remove it as a possible problem. As far as the switchgear goes, crack it open and see if there is any obvious signs of a short and give it all a good clean.

From my experience it normally ends in buying new switchgear to either rob parts or replace the whole thing.
