Have you ever had a dream where you realize your dreaming? It's a pretty strange expereince. This has only happened a couple of times in my life unfortunatley.
All I remember is thinking "wait this is just a dream" then in my dream recalling what I must look like and where I am as I'm sleeping. I then got somewhat freaked out after a while and tried opening and shutting my eyes in my dream to wake up.
I think dreams are pretty fascinating, if you could develop a lucid dreaming ability you could literally live whatever fantasy you'd like whenever you sleep.
Just curious to see if anyone else has had this, and if is how many times?

I hate it when spiders are running around my bedroom and I get up turn lights on and beat the other half up with pillows ____________________ All the breast.

I also wonder if the 'strangers' in your dreams are made up of random people you've past in the street or does your brain randomly process new faces to create a group of people you've never seen before (in your dreams) i.e you're dreaming you're at a crowded party, who are these people. |
That's an interesting point; I'm trying to think if I ever actually have total strangers in my dreams
I wonder if the brain is capable of just creating a totally new face like that or if subconsciously it always takes cues from the millions of faces you've seen over your lifetime in the media and in reality.
Not just in dreams, like now if you shut your eyes and just try to picture a new face (a sexy lady springs to mind obviously ) do you actually create one or are you subconsciously using another or parts of others?
I suspect you probably could but you have so many faces in your memory that whatever you try to construct will merge with one (whether you consciously remember it or not). I think the brain remembers faces differently from other images too and can store a huge number. It's possible to lose your ability to recognise faces (even your wife's) following brain trauma whilst still being able to recognise other objects from pictures for example. |
The same could be said for the locations in dreams, i've been to real life places that were altered in the dream, i've also dreamt of other places i've never been in my life, but it's definitely somewhere. The brain is definitely capable of creating a fresh new image from things you've seen over the years maybe from photos, movies, holidays etc. Last night i was in some unknown city.
I also wonder what dreams look like, when you're in the dream i'm sure it looks like how life looks now, but whenever i wake i can never picture the dream being that crisp or clear, i always picture it as a 'bad VHS copy' rather then DVD quality. (Bad example) |

Slightly off topic: I've always thought that one question can solve millions of answers & the brain is one of them, i find it 'interesting' that such a powerful & complex thing can evolve from nothing... It's not even about knowing more with every new day. Man has always dreamt. Was the first man able to dream the future or were dreams limited to what he knew & saw? |
I definately have a "dream world" consisting of a series of interconnected places. Places that are revisited and can be foudn by travelling from one place to another. One example is when I was walking through a forest/mountain place. After cresting a ridge I was able to look across a lake at a village I had been in a previous dream.
Also sadly in my dreams I can't dream things I've never done in real life - to an extent. So I'll never dream of hooning a sports thou through the high street. If I ever dream of bikes they are always really slow or constantly breaking down .
For the OP:

I had a lucid dream once: I'd read about the technique of holding you nose and trying to blow through it as a reality check.
In my dream everything started fading into one generic copy of each object.
So at first all the random people on the street switched into copies of 15 or so people, then a variation of 5 people etc etc until everyone was copies of one person.
All the houses were one sort of cartoon house and each tree like one "pattern" tree etc etc....
I was freaked out so went to a doctors surgery as I thought I was going insane, this followed:
DOC: Whats the problem then?
ME: Ok , let me talk without interrupting because I think I'm going insane and I'm afraid you'll turn...(Explained how everything was turning into single copies)
DOC: Have you considered the fact you may be dreaming?
ME: Dreaming? You think? How can I find out?
DOC: Ok, just hold your nose shut and try to breathe, if you can breathe then you are dreaming.
ME: OK, cheers doctor I'll give that a go.
I then try the technique in my dream and CAN breathe.
Fuck I'm in a lucid dream!! Yes!!!
Can I put my arm thru the lampost..?? So I swing my arm at a lampost and it bounces off. I try again this time, mentally relaxing and allowing my arm to "flow" through the post. It goes!!! I then swing my arm back and forth through the lampost totally amazed!!!
What amazes me about this, it SHOULDN'T have worked!! You are meant to practice the reality checks until they happen in real life so much they happen in your dreams....
However my brain saw fit to recall information I had read in real life and give it to via the doctor construct in my dream. Amazing!!

I've had one once, where I was in control (and can remember).
I was in a massive warehouse, and I mean like, bigger than comprehension should really allow. It had a platform at either end (think Bloodgulch in Halo 1) and like, a pokemon battle field in the middle (ice, fire, earth, water etc) - this is just how I can best describe it, it wasnt actually meant to represent this shit I dont think.
Anyway, as a bit of background info, anyone that knows me knows that I love Superheros etc - and I have genuinely prayed that powers were real since I was about 10. I still occasionally wonder at the cruelty of whoever/whatever created us with the ability to imagine that which cannot exist. Bit cliche, but my favourite is Superman, for many reasons.
This happened when I was working at an actual factory in real life, and around the factory was an expanse of open fields - and at the time it was early summer. So brisk breezes, bright blue skies and the sun shining on the area - I would walk to the sandwich shop down the road, but coming back to the factory, I would always imagine being able to run forward, and suddenly finding that I could run faster and more powerfully than before, and just as I got to the edge of the factory platform, with a huge drop to the open green fields and trees below - the concrete would crack from the force of my jump, and I would fucking rocket into the sky, to freedom from this monotony.
ANYWAY. In my dream, I found a ladder at the back of one of the platforms, and climbed it for ages. I didnt tire. It got to one point where there were wisps of cloud within my dream, still inside the factory. I hit a platform at the top, and climbed up. And realised immediately, that quite obviously this was a dream.
And the possibilities it presented. I remember questioning what I really wanted to do - and the obvious answer, was fly.
So I jumped - and failed. I plummeted downwards, the ladder wooshing past my ears, the air roaring, that dropping feeling more prominent than ever - and then stopped, a few feet from the ground. I was hovering. And it was possibly the best dream feeling I've ever had.
I then spent the dream trying to learn how to go in different directions - and I remember it taking forever for me to learn, but eventually, I could make my way from one end of the factory to another.
At one point, I made a mistake, dropped a few hundred feet, and as I righted myself I ended up accelerating faster than I had so far, and momentarily lost myself in euphoria, until I realised the edge of the factory was coming up. I braced myself, and as I smashed into it, I woke up.
Never been more gutted to leave a dream sequence - and this is the most vivid one I can remember. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

my dreams are always extremely detailed so its nice when it happens as theres always a lot going on.. often not making any sense whatsoever but hey.. its interesting ____________________ CBR954RR - Daily toy

I can pretty much 'get out' of any dream I want, if I dont like where the dream is going I can just wake up. Although recently I have been doing it less as I just think 'fuck it, lets see whats gonna happen anyway even if I am shit scared'.
Maybe I just have really fucked up dreams?
And the way people describe their dreams always seem so different to mine. Mine are almost always just completley random, eg I will be in a spaceship talking to the captain and then instantly I will be in my old school playground playing football, then I turn around and I'm actually at home but I have spiderman powers, then some creepy old woman appears and I decide to wake up! Something like that! ____________________ A2 Passed on 07/05/08, CG125 bought on 21/07/08. |

I generally close my eyes and the next thing I know it's morning. I rarely remember any dreams. |
