What channel?

Freesat HD ( https://www.freesat.co.uk ) is a free way to get HD TV. Buy the box, one off £150 odd. I have the Freesat+ PVR.

Freesat HD is currently the only way of getting BBC HD for free. Otherwise its sky's HD service. There are currently no terrestrial HD services in the UK. I don't think there is the bandwidth available at the moment.

You also need a HD TV, and I'd personally look for a TV that can do 1080p at least (preferrably 1080i but you won't need that unless you've got an xbox 360 or a PS3.)

720p is a better format for most applications than 1080i, purely because interlacing is shit and should have been dumped along with PAL and NTSC.

Frustratingly, the stupid americans decided to go with 59.9 frames per second so it was a kind of double NTSC which is totally pointless. The reason why NTSC was nominally 30 frames was down to the electical frequency of US AC power. This is irrelevant nowadays and so the americans were pretty stupid to make the frame count maths harder than it needs to be.

Gimme 25 or 50 frames a second any day.</offtopic slightly>

HD ready is a marketing tool. For all you know it could only support 720p when Sky only supports 1080i.

You'll probably be OK though.

or you could get a HD dvd player that also plays HD divx files of movies that are available to download illegally using 'torrents', and plug it into your hd tv using an hdmi lead

I have so little time to watch TV that it is not worth bothering with any of that stuff.
I sat down to watch Shameless tonight and instead spent the time writing an article about magnetos for a magazine and reading through the agenda of a SG meeting so Shameless is missed once again.

I always find that one funny... how people think it's better because it says 1080 where as its only really 540 lines of resolution nearly 200 less than 720p!!!!

It also really depends on the size of your TV too. If it's anything below a 42" you're not going to see much advantage with an HD picture over a SD picture unless you watch TV stuck to the end of your nose! Wink

Quick question on the how 1080i/p works on lcd screens.

I've got a 720p LCD tv connected by HDMI to my pc. Which should run a display resolution of 1280×720 afaik.

Yet I can set it to 1920×1080, am I correct in thinking that at that resolution it's essentially displaying 1080i?

If so, technically what resolution should I be setting it to then?

Ps. this is all fairly academic as I can't see any difference when playing a 720p or 1080p click on it, in either resolution!

Phew.. ok here goes!

Because your screen only has a resolution of 720, even though it accepts a 1080i signal (it may accept a 1080p?) it will downscale it to 720. Now there are two way of looking at this... if the TV is good, its downscaler will do a good job so in 'theory' if you pump a 1080p signal into it then you may get 'marginally' better picture quality. If it doesn't have a good downscaler then it can stuff your picture up horribly! Honestly though you are better sending it's native signal of 720p into it. As Mark says, interlacing is the work of the devil, so personally I would advise to avoid 1080i at all costs (and thats what the EBU also recommend strangely enough but the broadcasters over here ignored them and went for 1080i anyway Rolling Eyes )

So, bottom line, stick to 720p unless you have a native 1920x1080p TV then PLEASE stick 1080p into it... Mmm Blu-ray at 1080/24p looks gorgeous! Wink

Ah, just another note... as I mentioned earlier, size DOES matter when it comes to HD. You won't see much difference between SD and HD on a small screen with a good source. You need big screens to see the difference, same goes for 720 to 1080... at normal viewing distances you would need a 50"+ screen to start to see the difference between 720 and 1080! -

Does anybody know if Sky HD plans to broadcast in 1080p in the future? At the moment it only broadcasts in 720p and I think 1080i.

Bear in mind that the OP wants to watch shameless in HD, which is probably on Ch4 HD, which isn't available on Freesat yet, cos they're still bound to Sky.

So to watch it in HD you'd need a Sky HD box. Note that you wouldn't need a subscription to view Ch4 HD, but you would need a Sky card, available for £20 from Sky.

You can't record on a Sky HD box if you don't have a subscription either, you can only watch stuff.

Not for years and years and years and years, if ever.

They're pretty tight for bandwidth on satellite as it is, and all available new bandwidth will be used for more HD channels, rather than making existing ones 1080p.

Guess it's down to your vision/perception really!

I too have a 60" kuro at home and 720p looks MUCH better than 1080i, to me, but that is a cheap old domestic TV compared to what I use at work, and in those cases you see a VAST improvement!

The scaler in the TV will make a difference also, if the TV is better at up-resing than the whatever you are putting into it then that can make a difference, but it's the kit that is doing it! For some the scaler in the Sky box will be far better than what their LCD tv can do!

I always thought 1080p was better than 1080i? Although saying that my 42" LG is 1080p (which I run the PS3 at) and I cant really tell much of a difference if anything from 1080i/1080p.
