Hi,

I went out to fit my new battery and found this just hanging there... I'm guessing it's an earth wire? Where should it be?

Thanks,
Steven

If it is earth it would be connected to the frame/engine via a bolt.
Can you trace it back to the other end?

I traced it and it goes along the side of the frame under the seat, behind the rear light. It then connects to this... whatever that is...

Is that the main fuse?

If so i think it should be attached to the battery.

But shouldn't it be in with the starter relay?

How old is it?

Aha... I think it's an earth wire for an alarm which is under my seat - I never knew it had one and as far as I'm aware, it doesn't work. Does that seem right? Or is that the live wire and therefore it should be attached directly to the battery?

Bike is 1991 Honda CBR.

If it attaches to that red wire with the white plastic fuse holder on it, it should connect to the battery positive terminal.

It is not an original part of the bike, it supplies power to something electrical that has been added to the bike later on such as an alarm system.

Thank you - exactly what I've just done. This won't drain my new battery will it? I wasn't told/aware that there was an alarm on the bike when I got it. I don't even know if it works but I've connected it anyway.

Edit: What do you think that blue wire is, the sensor perhaps?

Now way of knowing until you find out what the other end of that red wire is attached to. It's probably powering something, or it could be left over from something that has since been removed. It may or may not run down your battery depending on what it is.

The red wire should continue on after the white plastic fuse holder. At the other end lies enlightenment (or a relay).

Yes but the point is it is a live wire not an earth.

Blue wire is the "ariel" for the alarm, red wire is power. Not sensible to re attach it unless you have a fob to turn the alarm off ???

That's brilliant, thanks! I had already connected the red wire up to the battery anyway but the alarm doesn't seem to be working. I don't know how it's supposed to sense the bike being touched/moved. I did manage to get it to make a noise while giggling about the wires though.

if you want to see if its draining your battery, put a multi meter (in amps mode) inline with it.

AFTER MAKING SURE ITS DEFINITELY NOT NEGATIVE

I've had it connected for 2 days now and doesn't seem to be draining the battery which is good Thumbs Up
