So I've hit a point of my life where I'm without a bike.

Last year in february i passed my car test, as it was something you needed to do, i was 20, so was getting on abit, commuting on bikes for the previous 4 years. The car came this year, after a bad experience with a yzf750r. No dis-respect to the bike, but for my to plough it into the back of a car after 2 short months of ownership, it got sold and a car was brought.

Every sunny day that has past has made me regret selling the bike. Can't believe im now a cager!.

So this is where i am. I had it drummed into me at 16 that i should never sell my first bike and i haven't. This came from my dad, who wishes he had never sold his.

This bike however hasn't had an easy life, i've always been a 'spirited' rider so this bike has been re-built many times over its short 1 year of use. It was left in a bad condition. The pictures shall explain...

Heres how it looked before, when it was (loved)..

When i was 16, thinking back now (5 years ago) i decided to try to make removed to rear pegs and make a single seater with fiberglass. It wasn't done very well...

I seeked advice on this forum on how to smooth it over, sanding commenced..

Today at college, someone suggested to remove the fiberglass, this hadn't really crossed my mind, this is intended to be low budget, and filler, more fiberglass (i was getting holes) and more sanding swayed my decision. So armed with a screwdriver...

https://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af340/nickdhall/IMG_0274.jpg

Found the back seat, so mocked up...

https://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af340/nickdhall/IMG_0275.jpg

I was left with alot of fiberglass resin stuck to the sides. I decided to stick with the screwdriver to try and chip it off. This worked, but i essentially keyed my own bike. Commence the sanding.

I've got a few more jobs to do, like seal up the oil tank, re-spray the panels, fit the back brake set up, and MOT/tax it, fit indicators and back light, back pegs and all the bodywork along with all the little jobs along the way.

I'll keep a record on here, for myself, my first bike, first project. Hope others will enjoy too, not necessarily a classic, but its still a bike!

Heres how it stands...

Plus heres a mock up with the fairing. Paint ideas welcome!!

Thanks for looking, Nick

The YZF lasted 2 months with me, it's definitely cursed.

Good luck with the project.

Is that a fake RS50? Certainly looks similar. Nice project, bet you hated removing all that fibreglass!

Lost the front end at 60, got off with a shattered finger luckily.

You going to do any engine work?

Tried my hand at 'plastic welding' this afternoon, its been quite successful, and on the cheap side too.

Ebays finest 40W soldering iron - £6.00 delivered
Small nails - free
aerosol lid - free (cable ties taking too long in the post)

I used the small nails to strengthen the parts that are under stress, melting them in then covering them over.

Heres how i got on...

The damage:

I still have a little more work to do on the nose cone, but all ready to sand and paint for Friday.

back to standard now, no point in doing it really.

The money i could spend to do i properly, again, can cover the brake line/pads and paint.

Just want to get it on the road for cheapish, then tinker it over time.

Plus nothing (apart from engine transplant) will take it away from being a 50.
