I'm trying to plan myself a little Europe trip, probably covering around 3-3.5k miles and I'm trying to add up all the costs, which led me to my tyres! How much life would you guess these tyres have left in them (that is if it's even possible to tell from a photo)

Also, they are Continental Road Attack's - any good? Thinking

looks like the rear is slick right in the middle, can't remember my tyre laws (focused mainly on cars) but I don't think it's allowed to be slick in the centre. Would get it cahnged soon tbh

EDIT: NICKED FROM A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH

The grooves of the tread pattern must have a depth of a least 1 mm throughout a continuous band measuring at least three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre

looks like that tyre is outright illegal going on the above

It's not supposed to be slick anywhere Laughing (where there's supposed to be tread)

And going by my usual standards probably around 5k.

But beware, there might not be any rubber, anywhere!

Front has loads, but the rear won't last the 3.5k miles.

Oh dear... I knew it was a little low of tread, but didn't know it was illegal! Shocked

I'll have a look mate, I'm guessing Ebay is my best bet?

I had a feeling the front would be ok, cheers Thumbs Up When replacing the rear, would it be best to get a straight replacement? (same brand)

Ebay is the best bet yes. I got 2 part worn Corsa III's for my Hornet for 60 quid Thumbs Up Loads of miles left.

You didn't know having no tread was illegal?! Shocked Laughing How?

If you can get the same make and model it'd be best. If not then get as similar as you can... And the test the bike out and make sure nothing feels funny so you don't go and do silly things and all of a sudden you get a weird feeling!

That's the only one's that aren't new... You could message the seller and ask if you can do a "buy it now" price. Did it with 3 previous other and they were more than happy too. The above is for front and rear.

As above your rear tyre is beyond it.

Same model and make if possible as they will be the same profile, if not then "some" reckon a less grippy rear of the same brand is an ok alternative.

I'd say it's probably best to replace like for like, go with what you know and all that.

Get it done ASAP, that tyre carries 3 points and a fine of up to £2500 Shocked

That rear tyre looks to have just a little bit more tread than mine does... Wink Cheers for that find! Unfortunately I'm skint until I get paid (2 weeks!) Sad But at least I know I need a new one and where to get them - Thanks Thumbs Up

Bloody hell, guessing it's not really safe to ride then? Might just keep it in the garage until I get a new tyre on it if that's the case.

Pah it's fine. I rode with a much much worse rear and my front one was slick on the edges yet had tread on the centre.

For about 2-3 months commuting and "spirited riding"

Just don't get stuck in front of a cop car. Wink

Bloody hell that's crazy! Shocked I'm guessing there was a bike difference in the ride when you fitted the new tyres then? Laughing

The front looks 'cupped' to me, which although is not illegal will seriously affect the handling. Cupping is where tread blocks are slightly different heights across the gap of the tread causing high spots on the tyre. This will affect the profile of the tyre and the grip supplied by the tyre.

Replace them both is my advice.

The Speed Fout 6 bolts that hold on the missle launchers, they are m6 (I think) black domehead Torx bolts. I can't for the life of me find anywhere that sells bolts like this.

I want to replace them for 2 reasons.

1 Having Torx headed bolts is just irritating
2 They are slightly rusty where they have been undone and the black coating as scratched.

I can get silver ones easily but they will not look right on the bike.

Wrong thread? Laughing

And Marjay, how can you see that it's cupped?

Edit: I see you wanted to start a new thread. But you somehow hit reply to this and change the title in "Subject" Laughing

Look about two thirds of the way up the front tyre, by where 'CONTI ATTACK' is stamped in the tyre. The tread block there is higher than the surrounding tread. It looks cupped to me.

What can cause the tyre to become cupped? Also, because I'm probably be going to do a lot of motorway miles for the trip - my house to Dover is about 480 miles on it's own, which is nearly 1k miles return - do you think it would make more sense to get a harder or cheaper tyre?

get a set of roadsmarts and be done with it. 10000+ miles from a front tyre and 7-8000 on a rear if it's a 600.

https://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs378.snc3/24206_419332890711_500990711_5204934_7307826_n.jpg

That was the state of the rear on my blade before I got it replaced. It had done about 6500 miles. Had it on in october when the bike was about 19000 miles. Got it changed yesterday and the odo was reading 25600. Rode it in winter, approximately 5k on the motorways and still had the hard centres/soft edges on the dual compounds to have fun in the weekend. Pretty grippy in the wet and a very good do it all tyre. I had the front on for about 12k miles before it was chamfered. Still had plenty of tread left in the centres but didn't do my confidence any good.

Running on low pressures, overheating, poor tyre design. Lots of things. I'm no expert but I know that it is bad. Its like riding a knobbly with very small knobbles.

There's a bit of a tell-tale on the 'peaks' of the tread-pattern too, looks like the rubber's been rolling a bit under heavy braking. I'd keep the front and change the rear. Do both if you can afford it.
