If I removed the magnetic section, would this still be a stupid idea? The one I have is second hand and could do with the fabric being cleaned properly.

Try some car upholstery cleaner on it, costs about a quid from places like lidl and cheap diy type shops.

I thought about that, but thought that rubbing it with a cloth would damage the lettering stitching?

Hmmm.... dunno then, a washing machine on cold is unlikely to hurt it tbh.

I've washed a rucksack before and that came out alright.

Bowl of warm soapy water ( something like Johnsons baby lotion soap whatsit dodah ) and a nail brush, then hanging it out on the line should do it...
