... who reckons I'm still off to Thailand?

Voting options are up, but the story goes thus.

I have a flight booked on Tuesday 4th, via New Delhi, to Bangkok.

I was then going to spend a few days having an induction in teaching English as a foreign language, and generally getting orientated. Then I was getting chauffeured to my school/accommodation some 9 hours away, to live amongst them for a week before I started teaching...

Now, anyone keeping up to date with the news Laughing

FCO advisary against being white in any part of Thailand

Basically, it seems the airport is barricaded and they're fully on the verge of civil war. 'My' airline is still flying UK - India, and India - Bangkok (for returning Thai's only basically) so I shan't be getting my moolah back for my flight, or flying at present.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaarvellous.

I reckon option two, I reckon Bangkok would be a bit hectic, but I wouldn't imagine they'd give much of a shit out in the sticks, plus you'd probably be the only farang there anyway.

Just go to New Delhi...and hang out for a bit...it's mental there, and Bangkok will seem like nothing at all after you've been there a while.

Take a trip to the Taj Mahal, about an 8 hour hair raising ride down the 'motorway' (I say that with inverted commas because although technically 3/4 lanes, there are still animals wandering across, plus traffic that clearly doesn't understand the rule of the road coming hurtling towards you on the wrong carriage way etc).

Get a fairly cheap flight to Goa, hang out with the Russians for a bit, then head off for Thailand thereafter. Perfecto!

Aye, just talked to the recruitment company this side, and he basically told me to ignore it all and just come over anyway. Laughing

Busy week arranging things now it would seem.

My Dad is well out of his comfort zone with this, bless him.

Oh and FYI, I have no travel/health insurance if I go out now either, because the FCO advise against it.

Oooh, exciting Very Happy

You should still go. I dont think it will erupt into civil war, just keep away from anyone wearing a red shirt, dressed as a soldier, or mysteriously dressed in black.

The ones dressed in black have been reported as agent provocateurs mixing with the red shirts firing at soldiers to get the soldiers to attack red shirts.

For people who avoid all danger and need to be completely safe at all times, maybe they shouldnt go, but I dont think that applies to you.

https://www.economist.com/world/asia/displaystory.cfm?story_id=15910929

excerpt
"The rogue firepower appeared to come from black-clad men armed with assault rifles and explosives. Similar agents provocateurs have played walk-on roles in previous political showdowns in Bangkok. Your correspondent watched a gunman step into the street where red shirts had taken cover and calmly direct a burst of fire towards the army lines. On a parallel street, protesters overran a column of armoured personnel carriers, whose captured crewmen were later paraded on the rally stage, along with the corpses of two protesters."

So there's men parading around in black kinky underwear inciting violence, and no one's thought to mention it before or thought it was a little strange ?...

Or is it a common occurance over there ?...

I talk to quite a lot of thati's & it doesnt seem they have anything against foreigners.

May cause problems due to infrastructure chaos/closedown but it isnt aimed at a ace/social class. It's aimed at their own government.

Take care, war zones are addictive. In Zimbabwe I used to ride or drive in the direction of gunfire just for the buzz. When I got back to the UK I missed it so much that I headed out to Palestine for six months.

Its pretty common. Our lot are called the SAS.

After Iraq was invaded, and saddam defeated, it took a bit of effort from our boys to set alight the fames of civil war between rival groups of muslims. One of our SAS boys, was captured by Iraqi police dressed as an arab, with a car full of explosives. Some people including me, thought this was a sign that we were bombing one group of muslims, so they thought they had been attacked by the other group of muslims.

This policy is a traditional colonial one known as divide an rule, and we have been doing it for centuries. When the fighting bettween the locals has burnt itself out, you just step in and take the country without so much resistance.

This cloak and dagger stuff is always hard to prove though.

We have even had some of it in fairly modern day europe with operation gladio, which involved right wing elements infiltrating left wing groups to get them to plant bombs to turn people against them.

The economist, has changed its line on the mysterious men in black among the red shirts, they now say that these are gunmen who are on the redshirts side supporting them, but the redshirts claim to be non-violent.

An incident in which government supports were fired on with grenade launchers, could be an attempt to turn people against their supposed attackers, when actually it was a government thing.

This is known as a false flag attack, from the days of ships identifying themselves by flying their national flag. So you could attack the spanish flying a french flag, when you were actually british, and the spanish might declare war on the french, weakening each other, so you could then fight and beat each one in turn.

Well I actually found the boom of gunfire on the Pakistan border quite chilling really...although watching the big guns roll past on the roads was quite exciting.

Yeh, I can imagine I'll be that kind of deviant too. Closest I've got is savage poundings at paintball, when you're not getting hit but everything around you is. Should imagine that would be damn fun with live fire Thumbs Up

Main crux now is the old man panicking. Looks to me like the obvious answer is to fly in to BKK, and if it's fucked, take a flight to the north/laos and travel to Sakhon Nakhon on my own Thumbs Up
