As the title asks. What websites were you using pre-2000? What messenger services? MMORPGs?
I remember using mostly teenchat to troll people, temple of the screaming electron (TOTSE.com) to find bomb recipes and other illegal shit, steakandcheese.com for funny images and videos and maintaining my geocities site. Downloading NES, commodore 64 and gameboy emulators was a blast too. As for porn, videos took too long so it was a quick altavista search for celebrities names with "nude" or "topless attached".
Used IRC and then old school MSNmessenger, whilst other people used ICQ and yahoo.
In fairness I was only 10-13 years old during that time.
I bet kickstart was maintaining encyclopedia britannica's website. ____________________ Current Bikes: Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 (2020)

From then on, I and the bicycle feelings deeper. |

Something SERIOUSLY dodgy on IRC that sparked a nationwide outcry in the papers.

Think it was around the time that we first discovered 'free music' from Winmx. Was truly amazing to find any song you had ever listened too. Before this you either had to buy it from the shop or wait for it to come on MTV. Even then, you couldn't find the oldschool dance/house/garage songs so this really was big. |

Using the newsgroups and various OneList groups to source parts for obscure old nails. Harping on about how things were so much better in the old days. And upping and downing porn. Pretty much like today Newsgroups are largely just one big sack of spam shit and OneList became eGroups and then Yahoo Groups, but not much has changed really.
Best development to come along in the past ten years, aside from broadband, is torrent sites, IMHO. ebay proves itself to be invaluable from time to time as well. ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris |

I thikn I started using the internet at about the time of the demise of the original Napster.
Remember downloading music and other things on Kazaa. But do remember it taking about 16 hours to download a 40mb video.
Think I started MSN Messenger on about version 2 with the old school 256 color emoticons. Remember having cyber sex with fellow 12 year olds (read 46 year old men called Trevor) on MSN Chat aswell. Happy times.

Newsgroups, IRC, Everquest, Half Life, Quake 2 (particularly CTF). Think it was about then I went from a 33.6kbps modem to a 128k ISDN, my pings went down to 10 from 250+ and suddenly I didn't suck so much at Team Fortress Classic ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Waiting for the clock to tick round to midnight at the weekend to hit the BT 1p / minute local rate calls.
30 day free trial coverdiscs.
28.8kbps modem.
IRC, newsgroups, flat-file forums that ran on perl scripts (Matt's Script Archive!), downloading almost unwatchable videos the size of a postage stamp (and it taking ages). Talking to folks on chat about music and it being more efficient to make them a tape and post it than to send music electronically. ICQ numbers. |

Oh man that used to annoy me. My ICQ number had, like, maybe only 5 or 6 digits, when everybody got to having 7-digit numbers, I was bored of it by then. I was also bored of talking to people by free or cheap internet telephony by about 1998, so Skype is just more of the same to me (although I don't know, cos I have never used Skype, possibly without the HUGE time delay between one person talking and the other starting, LOL).
I actually owned (until it got totally spammed out) the original hellkat-at-hotmail-dot-com account - lost it probably nearly 10 years ago now
I started out in about 1996 or 7 on some website called Arcadium, which was for gaming freaks, and had those little green lights to show when someone was online : at the time I thought they were JUST THE COOLEST THING.
And then there's cybersex... oh how much "fun" was that. The novelty soon wore off.
I spent a lot more time on American biker forums, with a lot of Harley supremacy, which did me no harm: I learnt a bit about Harleys - what little I do know about bike engines came from reading stuff written by old greybeards in the tech section on those boards. I really should go back to doing that now
I was such a total noob, it was obvious to them. I didn't care, I absorbed a LOT of interesting information, not only about bikes in general, Harleys in particular, a lot of modified chops and bobbers, etc., but also about the lifestyle and the mentality of what could be described as the more "hard core" element
So I pissed off a few people, nothing new there then. Got banned from one forum and even to this day if I posted on there in my own persona, the cvnt who owns it would still delete my posts.
But I also "met" some really cool people, both online and in real life.
After I'd had my fill of American boards, I discovered Stefan's ratbike zone and also around the same time I think Bikersweb started up.
And that's just from the interest in bikes ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
