Today we thought it would be fun to take the top end off my bike and have a play around and make sure everything was ok.

Everything was ok apart from setting up the cam timing. Somehow by sheer luck the first time we put it back together it was180 degrees and 1 tooth out so the valves didn't hit the piston but it didn't start and just backfired very very loudly.

Figured out that we needed to turn it 180 degrees so off with the tank, electrics, cam cover, cct, cam timing gear and moved the gear round half way and put it on. It kind of ran but very sluggish so another tooth sorted that out.

There were no markings on the cam like described on the internet and in the workshop. Just a large chunk in the end which was horizontal at TDC.

After all this stress it was time to have a fag Laughing

Lol im currently putting off doing my valve clearances. Can't imagine stripping down my whole top end "for fun" Shocked

Although I would quite like to get a project bike to learn all about it. I know how most stuff works, but don't want to mess anything up on the only bike I have!

get a project engine. youl pick up an old 4 stroke mower or something for a few quid, strip it and have fun.

once youve done one there all ( kind of ) the same.

a single cylinder 4 stroke is about the second simplest bike engine you can get.

Yeah should have messed around with my CG more when I had it.

Barely touched it and bought an older Bandit once I sold it. Since then all the problems ive had, like stripping the carbs, have been made more difficult than they would have been if id just practised on the CG.

Never got round to the valve clearances on that either, so now looking at doing 16 instead of 2. Doh!

Clearances are easy compared to removing valves etc.

Just make sure everything is tight when you re assemble.
