Inspired by another thread, just wondering what the BCF Populus has been through in terms of accidents excluding bikes.

Myself

I was in a car doing 60mph when the front left wheel ripped itself off and we grinded sideways into the side of the road. No one harmed but everyone shat themselves.

In a boat once, cousin driving in he ploughed into a beach that I didn't realise was there, I flew over the front and landed on my back.

On a half pipe at an all nighter BMX/Skateboard session at an indoor skate park, I was pulling one-handers and shizzle whilst getting some air and all that. The weed I had been smoking prior seemed to slow my reactions somewhat, as my hand missed the handlebar on the way down, resulting in the wheel turningand my leg getting trapped between the front wheel and frame, clicking it 180 degrees whilst I'm sliding down the rest of the pipe. 3 months on crutches during the summer holidays and 2 pins in my ankle later and I was all good again.

Was in a car with 2 mates, I was foolishly encouraging him to wheelspin around the roundabout faster and faster until he lost control. If it hadn;t been for the lampost we'd have flew straight into someones living room. Smoke started pissing out from the dash, we got out and my mate tried to salvage it, but then the engine shat out the bottom of the car, so we figured it probably wasn't going to drive any further.

Thats all I can remember right now.

A few months after I passed my test (spring 1989) I managed to run into the back of a district nurses car when she stopped unexpectedly on what looked like an open, clear 40mph road. Apparently a gardener was lopping off some overhanging branches from a tree, and one of the branches fell right in her path.
Not too much damage, just some flat spots on my tyres, a smashed headlight, and cracked front grille. Her car had a cracked brake light and a scuffed bumper.

Years later (late 1999), I'm waiting to turnright at a T-junction when some muppet runs into the back of me at what turned out to be about 45mph in a 30 limit. Dickhead managed to write off both cars, all for the sake of leaning over to change a radio channel. Evil or Very Mad

Another big gap in time (till Sept 2009), and had another rear ender when stuck in a line of stationary traffic. Another case of the other driver speeding and not looking where he was going... Another write off.

As for the bike, I've had one or two close calls with drivers pulling out in front of me, but thankfully never been in a bike accident

Yep, plenty...all driven my other people. Worst one being, when I was 7 years old, my Dad pulled into a layby we were run into the back by a truck who hadn't seen us. I ended up with a broken neck, broken wrist and one broken finger.

I was in traction in hospital for a few months, sand bags around my head to stop any movement; (it was my corner of the car that took the worst battering). Parents got whiplash, my baby brother was fine.

I had a little crash in my dads van when i was 12.

Kia went into the back of a golf at about 30, golf was punted into the van. No damage to either the van or gold. But the kia's crumple zone, well crumpled.

Nothing more in cars.

But ive had 7 on the bikes over the >2 ive been riding. All but 2 have been low speed spills on ice or rain.

on 11th May it will be 5 years since i tried gymnastics in a new Vectra down the M621 in Leeds, hit a puddle going round a bend (junction 1 slip road from gildersome roundabout if anyone knows it) car went sideways into the central reservation, flipped in the air a couple of times, slid the best part of 350m down the road.. dont remember a great deal about it, except for the unmistakable sound of bending metal, and right said fred coming onto the radio...

car was a write off, 2x doors cut off to get me out and generally a mangled mess. i broke my neck (C3 & C4 vertebrae), Back (T5 Vertebrae), shoulder, all ribs on my right hand side, hip, collar bone etc etc... spent 2 weeks on a life support machine in the LGI, then 3 months in a wheel chair at Pinderfield Hospital.

All fine and 99.9% recovered now, but definitely a slower and more cautious driver, and have a much better idea of who my friends are!

What do i win ??

Not including bikes...

Had the front nearside corner of a Merc Sprinter demolished by a Micra on Wigmore Street W1, who refused to apply the brakes at all as I turned across her path. She was hidden by a large oncoming van before it was too late.

White van man lesson #77 sub-section 4.

Shortened the wheelbase of a land rover discovery significantly when I had a head on with it on a single track road driving a 7.5t Merc. No excessive speed, just couldn't get the empty truck to stop downhill on a slimy road in time, steering unresponsive and there was nowhere to go anyway.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/bashysmashy1.jpg

Travelling too fast for the conditions in retrospect, but then again, so was he.

White van man lesson #163.

Thankfully, no injuries on either side for both incidents.

Had an entire wheel hub make a bid for freedom, but by some fluke managed to pull over before the half shaft came out completely.

Whoever put that hub together last made a cock up of it.

Loads of falls off horses. Probably the worst to date was when jumping XC - We popped the jump no problem, but the direction I wanted to turn after the jump was the opposite to the way the horse wanted to go. So we parted company at speed.

Wouldn't have been so bad if my foot hadn't got stuck in the stirrup. Resulted in a really nasty sprained ankle. Luckily I was wearing a body protector so my ribs were bruised but not broken.

I then had to catch the damn horse and walk about a mile back to the lorry, stopping mid way so my friend could take her horse through the new water jump complex.

2 years on and I still don't have full movement back in my ankle.

I also broke my little finger jumping, got myself a perfect large heart shaped bruise on my arse falling onto a stone, had the my shin skinned by a horse jumping off the lorry, got kicked in the ribs when I got stuck in the mud leading a horse from the field and fell in front of it, made everyone laugh when I face planted in the menege when teaching a horse to trot up (i was running along side the horse) ...

Hey,

Driving my Fiat Cinquientio home from work one day i was getting cocky and taking bends a little too quickly. Before i knew it i had clipped the verge, the car slid sideways, went through a hedge and i found myself bumping through a field. I was almost certain the car was going to roll.

Eventually it came to a stop. I patted myself down and realised all my limbs where still attached and to my amazement the engine was still running!! I drove across the field and back onto the road.

Only injury i seem to have sustain was a bumped head from when the sun visor flicked down!!

Other than that i have had no other accidents Very Happy

Cheers,
Shaun.

Had 3 or 4 accidents in cars - tapped up the rear a couple of times, and twice someone's turned right into me (no, different people). They are the ones that scare me most when I think about them with regards to the bike - especially the first one - a lass in a Golf waiting to turn right in to a side road; she moved an inch and then stopped again after deciding she wouldn't get across in front of me.... then went anyway just as I came up to her. Hit me just behind the front indicator and did this:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v471/defblade/Old%20cars/14e3006bmw.jpg

:which is quite a lot of damage from a standing start and maybe 2 foot of acceleration Sad

Second time the lad was travelling up the road towards me and had no reason why he barely slowed as he turned right - a real SMIDSY, but for a car!!

Like I say, these scare me most as if I'd have been on the bike in each case, there'd have been a lot worse than just crumpled metal (although I missed most of the second one by swerving - I might have managed to miss him entirely on the bike) and 100% not my fault and nothing I could really have done about them except stay at home in the first place.

I was jumping my mountain bike when I was 12 when the forks snapped on landing. I panicked a bit and death gripped the bars then as what was left of the forks dug into the ground my chest smashed into the stem fracturing my sternum. I had no idea I'd done it but I knew it hurt loads to breathe deeply or laugh which sucked because all my mates at the time were trying to make me laugh to cheer me up after just smashing myself into the ground.

My mum came to get me and my bike and took me to hospital just to be sure where I got x-rayed and then kept in over night. The doctor said if I'd of pushed my sternum back another 10mm I'd of punctured my heart and died of internal bleeding Shocked

Been in a few small car crashes as well. Some guy pulled out last second on me and my mum when we were about 1 mile away from the NEC bike show (after travelling for about 2 hours to get there Evil or Very Mad ) and smashed the front of the Mondeo we were travelling in which had to be recovered home so I didn't get to the bike show that year.

I was a passenger in a small knock for knock on a country road but no one was hurt although the Fiesta we were in had a bit of a mangled wing and a puncture.

numerous accidents

3wks from passing my test i put my mums astra estate on its roof with 4 passengers, all walked away without a scratch

drove into my dads garage door as i didn't know where reverse was in my nova

went into the back of a serria in my old nova

bumped a car whilst parking, drove off and never looked back (feel bad about that one) can't recall what car i was in now

came round a corner into my estate too quickly and hit a parked car in my dads fiat uno

drove into a cupboard in my dads garage whilst putting my escort xr3i away

slid down a hill on snow in my saxo vts and hit a range rover thing, his fault really as he came to a stop on the hill, but momentum keep me going Sad

corsa hit my smart on a roundabout, i was in lane 2, she was in lane 1, she decided on the roundabout that she wanted to go all the way round as i was going over it, no real damage to my car so ignored it.

idiot in an Audi TT smashed into the side of my smart on a roundabout as he didn't look at my approach road and just pulled out.

that's all i can recall, so not too many considering i past in '96, all bar 1 was minor (astra one)
