A rather lovely Golf TDI Sport...... (just like this one).

I'm feeling all posh.

I LOVE diesel cars. Missed them, not had one for 10 years!

I don't know how anyone can get excited about a diseasel - they're the most uninspiring engines ever invented; low revving and don't even make a satisfying noise when revved.
They should remain where they belong - agricultural applications, not in cars, and certainly not in bikes.

You need to drive some decent ones then, get a decent turbo diesel, the BMWs have a lot of power and torque and that's before you chip them, also get a satisfying whoosh from the turbo as you accelerate. Some of the big 3litre vans give a nice turbo swoosh aswell.

The breaks are great (my last cars were sloppy). I've driven it twice with no problem. I'm quite used to driving lorries with horses in - that is brteaking you have to be careful with Wink Smile

As for people not liking Diesel, thats fair enough, but personally I love the strength of the engine, the grunty noise/feel and don't want a car for top speed - got my bike for that Very Happy Middle Finger

Thumbs Up happy birthday MissEdwood Very Happy

My mum has a Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi, solid motor, and similar to the VW.

As for diesels not being fun, what about the old Fabia VRS? I'm sure that was a diesel and it was bloody quick XD

Afraid for me being quick doesn't mean it is fun. I want a torque curve that goes up and peaks at high rpm (like most 2 strokes). A normal 4 stroke with a fairly flat torque curve is bad enough (even if powerful), but having a high early peak torque and then having it drop rapidly away (like a diesel, and like some modern turboed petrol cars) is just boring. Promises loads at low rpm then doesn't deliver when you use the revs.

All the best

Keith

Thinking fair enough, I'm not too hot on the whole performance diesel thing, wouldn't have one by choice, but can see the appeal to those that would.

I'd have something the size of a shoe with a reasonably large nitroglycerin/petrol powered engine any day of the week Laughing

Hi

The changes you feel when accelerating are the changes in torque with rpm. When you feel a surge at (say) 8k that is torque picking up. Hence you can have something that feels like it is accelerating harder and harder as the revs increase.

Power is just torque x rpm, so as rpm increases power increases even if torque is dropping off a bit and acceleration is getting slowly worse until the point that torque drops away rapidly.

It is that tailing off of torque that I find uninspiring. Charlottes Thunderbird has peak torque at about 4000rpm, then drops off before really tailing off from 6500rpm, and this to me just makes revving it feel pointless. May as well change up and go to sleep. In comparison the TZR250 has peak torque at about 10k, having twice the torque it had at 5k. This just encourages you to play with the revs.

Read an interesting bit in a car magazine a week or so ago. Think it was Nissan saying that the next generation Micra won't have a diesel version. Their new 3 cylinder petrol engine costs them about £650, while an equivalent diesel clean enough to get through the next emissions standard would cost them about three times that.

All the best

Keith

This.

I had a Spanish Golf (Leon FR550) with the 170ps tdi engine for a while as a company car. As the Oracle says, it promised loads lower in the revs, but it was all over far too quickly for my liking.

^^ That's the reason i won't buy a 'nice' new-ish car anymore - if it's pristine, any dents, dings etc are extremely noticeable and feck you right off.
If the car's a tatty looking shed to start with, new knocks aren't quite as apparent.
When i've had 'nice' cars in the past they've always been a source of worry, i couldn't give a fuck what happens to my rather tatty MR2 - i've had a replacement numberplate bezel for months (to replace the one that was knackered by someone reversing into it in a carpark and then fucking off without leaving a note), but can't really be bothered to swap it over.
A few battle scars adds to its character.
Wink

Did`nt Peugeot win the 24 hour La-mons a few years ago with a diesel? .
mind you, my Astra diesel is not exactly a world beater, but it does get me there in the end! Smile
