 Posted: 22:11 - 14 May 2010 Post subject: CHAIN/TYRE CLEARANCE |
 |
|
Hi all,
im currently getting my latest project ready for mot'ing, but just noticed what might be an issue.
the tyres on the bike have only done about 100miles, so are pretty new, but looking at the back tyre, it seems too wide.
in fact im convinced its too big, as there very little room between the chain & tyre, like a few mm's!
would this be an issue for mot tester?
ignoring the obvious handling issues. (i havnt riden it yet).
i will of course look for a new back tyre, but just wondering if it will pass like it is, as i havnt budgeted for tyres this month & funds are pretty tight.
any advice?
cheers,

I would just put it in for the mot and DONT SAY A WORD to the tester.
if the chain is clear of the wheel it`s clear of the wheel.
if in the next couple of months you see signes of the chain rubbing the tyre sort it. ____________________ It`s all powerfull white mans magic

Hi,
the chains not actually touching the wheel, but if you look very closely at the tyre, there are signs that it probably did rub on the tyre for the 1st few miles.
why the previous owner fitted such a wide tyre is beyond me.
i guess i'll just keep schtum when i drop it off for testing.
then look into getting a new tyre.
cheers,

Is it a standard width tyre?
There is only a few mm clearance between my centrestand and my tyre btw, it passes MOTs . |

You don't need much clearance. A few mm will do . ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Chains don't flail side to side very much at all. They follow the roatating plane of the sprockets quite closely. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Hi,
right youse lot have got me worried now!
so im gonna postpone the mot for another week or so, till i look into getting another rear tyre & also test run it, just to see if the chain/tyre clearance does cause any issues.
fortunate thing is i have 3 choices for getting the mot done.
1 : 5miles away, doesnt really give a f*ck, as long as its fairly safe, has a reputation for being very lenient & doesnt do much bike repairs so wont say you need work done just to increase his payment.
2 : about 12miles,quite strict, guys a bit of a pr*ck but known for being very knowledgable about bikes & if its passed an mot there, itl pass anywhere!.
3 : not actually an mot tester, but for the price of the mot + a tenner, he wil tell you if its going to pass (actually uses no.2 guy for certs) so if its gonna fail, its only a tenner, unless you want him to do the work.
think i'll bung it into the 1st one & see how it goes,
cheers,

It wont fail unless it's physically touching the tyre at the time of the test.
FFS, We've had people pull into our carpark at work in 2 separate cars. A good example of this was a couple of BMWs a few months ago.
2 BMW 3 series motors pull in, One has 4 bald tyres and is for an MOT. The other has 4 decent tyres, and not in need of MOT.
The customers jack up both cars, and swap all 4 wheels on the cars, IN our carpark!
The BMW then has it's MOT, Passes, And when it's backed out of the center, The customers then Jacked the cars up again, And swapped the wheels back over!
If it's okay at the specific time of the MOT, Then it will pass.

hmmm, seems to be a bit debateable then,
there is signs of rubbing on the tyre, from when the tyre was new i guess, but i had to look at it very carefully, a few times, comparing the other side before spotting it.
guess its up to the examiner, think i'll take a risk, its only 30 quid for the mot, whereas its around 90 for a tyre.
cheers,
