Rough departure date: November 2011

This is only an idea floating around my head at the moment, but thought I would get something written down so I can think more clearly about it and also see if I can get some ideas from you guys.

I usually work a seasonal job so I am stuck either doing nothing or getting temp work over Christmas. I don't like Christmas anyway, so thought it would be a good time to start planning for an adventure next year.

My plan is; to buy a bike as cheaply as possible and prepare it myself over the summer, then ride abroad and stay there as long as my funds allow before returning home.

I haven't thought much about a destination to be honest, bar getting out of Western Europe as soon as possible so my money goes further. I'd like to travel through Eastern Europe but I am guessing it will be very cold in winter! Africa is a definite possibility, although then I will have added ballache of carnets and visas etc, so perhaps it won't work out cheaper at all.

Now that I have actually got some ideas written down, so to speak, I will probably be reading through the HUBB etc looking for some suitable destinations, and posting my ideas on here.

Have you guys got any wisdom you could share with me? Also, I am not actively seeking anyone to travel with but I'm not bothered either way. If you think this sounds up your street then by all means give me a shout.

Just that it will be bloody cold, snowy and not much fun, you need to head south to escape winter temperatures but as you want to be in Eastern Europe that will involve surviving the trip through France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia etc you'd need to be right down near Greece to have any kind of decent temperature and even then it'll still be cold a lot. I don't see the point though when for pretty much all the riding you'll be fighting off hypothermia.

Like I said, I was afraid this would be the case. Any other suggestions for places to go? I'm not ruling out anywhere at this stage, even if it involves shipping the bike or hiring one elsewhere.

You could go somewhere like Morocco, ferry down to Spain would bypass France and beginning of November Spain wouldn't be too bad. No idea on what it takes to get a bike into Morocco though and what visiting/working regulations are if you plan to work to support yourself. Unless you like offroading and riding around a desert though i'm not sure what else it has to offer.

Morocco is fairly easy to get into from what my parents say. Also it is pretty cheap there, especially if you choose the cheap hotels. Only problem is the mountain passes over the Atlas will likely to be blocked by snow. My Mum and Dad where there this October:

Facebook link, so unsure if it works

I really enjoyed it through the mountains too

Morocco is one of the cheapest and most intresting places l,ve traveled, you dont need need a offroad bike or a U&C wanker bike as most of the main roads are in good nick unless you plan to go offroad.

No carnet or visa needed, can stay up to 6 months from memory and that includes the western sahara.

border crossing is hassel free compaired to the likes of russia/ukraine just keep your wits about you as morocans and theving scamming buggers.
