Hey,
So i rebuilt my starter a while back and it sounds horrible as its not lubed in there atall.
I am going to replace a gasket (left engine side) so figured i may as well get the starter out.

The part that rotates (picture 1) was completely dry when i stripped the starter and cleaned it, it runs on bearings either end so i figure that dosnt need any lubrication (grease the bearings somehow, although their shielded) however the gears etc (picture 2) will need some.

Sooo, what to use? I have some all purpose grease (loverly stuff!) but someone suggested petrolium jelly (vasaline). It sounds strange to me to be honest but has anyone else heard/come accross this?

Would the grease be a bad idea or should i try the vasaline? I'm not to keen on taking it all appart in a few months as i suspect the vasaline may not stay put.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Best regards

-Jvr

dunno if you should use grease but i would say use high speed roller bearing grease or some sort of centrifugal grease. dont know where you can get any, i use some industrial stuff that my grandad has had for years haha
dunno if that helps Neutral

I definitely wouldn't use vaseline, as soon as some of the engine heat warms it up it will go everywhere!

I thought they lubed themselves with engine oil on the inside of the bike?
Atleast i was under the impression theres a seal around the starter motor to stop oil leaks.

That stuff is abrasive and would be line using a mild grinding paste on it.

Normally an electric motor will use a high temperature lithium grease blend.

But normal grease will do.

Vaseline is only for Lips and Arseholes.
