I've seen this discussed on here before but can't seem to find the thread.

Has anyone run the tyres the opposite way they're meant to to make them last longer?

I have some Supercorsa race scrubs that are more worn on the right side and was thinking of putting them on the wrong way. What experiences do people have from doing this?

the only reason i can think of is because of the tread, when its run backwards it wont displace water properly, but this wont be an issue on the track... Neutral

I wouldnt risk it to be honest

pro:
save £120

cons:
it may cause the bike to crash at speeds of excess over 100mph. The crash would most likely be mid corner as well or while braking, which means it may be a high side or at a very fast speed.

worth the risk?

I remember that thread, it was Big Ham I think who was asking or answering, result was it would be fine to do as long as it is dry. As said above it will reverse the tread and water will not dispurse as it should.

It is a good idea as most UK tracks have a majority of right hand bends on the circuit. Just make sure it is dry.

Yeah, I've got a set of wets so water dispersal isn't a problem. Some (American) forums said that the tread will stretch more and the grooves will open up, is there any truth to this?

Never heard that before, but then again I have never tried it, I would only think that would happen if you were really pushing the limits on your tyre.

PM Big Ham, he might know a bit more about this.

Done it loads of times to get a bit of extra life out of a tyre. Getting rid of water isn’t a big issue under normal use with motorbike tyres and definitely not for supercorsas.

It’s worth keeping an eye on the join line – a band going across the tyre where the two ends are glued together bascially.
This is done at an angle, which means that while riding with it on the right way around it’s effectively pushing down compressing the join together. The other way around, it’s kinda pulling up on the join. Never seen it happen, but apparently it’s possible it can start to pull the tread up from there.

Not sure where ben.'s 'con' comes from Confused.

Remember while a tyre is turning one way, it’s still designed to have forces applied at all sorts of different angles.

Common for enduro/motocross tyres to reverse them half way through so you get even wear on the knobs.

l fitted a dunlop tyre backwards by mistake on my YZF750 and could,nt be arsed to redo it, had no problems apart from a increased lack of grip in the wet.

OT a little, but this is the case for all clockwise circuits. It's why figure of 8 circuits are clearly the best design.

Hi

Have seen a tyre fitted the wrong way round to a new bike, which had (for want of a better word) split across the tyre, probably from the point G mentions. However whether a soft track tyre would last long enough for this to be a problem is another question

For a figure of 8 demolition derby I doubt tyre life is that important Wink .

Out of interest, what tracks around the world do have a figure of 8 setup? Only one I can think of is a Japanese circuit.

All the best

Keith

Yeah, Suzuka's the only one I can think of too.

On the rotating tyres thing. General concensus is that's fine provided the tyre's not completely worn out. Plenty of people faster than me have done it with no issues.

Bear in mind if you're planning to race with it you may not pass scrutineering with a turned tyre, but it depends how vigilent they are.

Some carcasses are bidirectional anyway (such as the Racetec) so it makes no difference at all on them.

The only thing to watch as already said is water dispersion, but I guess you have a set of wets/don't go out if it rains.

- Suzuka (as per Big_Ham)
- Singapore street circuit I think
- Oran Park in Australia

They're the only ones I can think of.
