I was just watching a bike tip video and basically it was saying you should change every gear around 6-8k even first.

Do you do this or normally shift lower or higher?
I dont tend to go that high in 1st

High revs if I want to accelerate quickly.

Lower revs if I don't.

It all depends on what bike you have (engine size, layout etc..)! Wink

Depends on what mood i'm in...

But on most bikes over learner size even reving to 6K is going to out pace all but the real supercars off the line.

Tend not to look at clocks off the line, just let your feelings take over. More often than not sub 4K, as I like to keep the MPG up. Even then a car has to be trying to beat you off the line.

TBH. Anything of 500+ going by that you would never get into the higher gear's as most at that rev's will be over the NSL in 4th.

Does it not take into account that different bikes rev differently at all?

My Armstrongs only rev to about 7k tops, whereas on the RG125, I wouldn't change till 11k.

Hammering the SV I'd change around 9k.

For piddling about, I change whenever I can be bothered, not too bothered about MPG. Thumbs Up.

pooteling about, 5-6k, to get going quick 10-11k

CBR600. The big shove is at 7k so just riding normally i don't need to go that high.

ER-5 that i'm doing test on, 4k or so for town riding(i keep it there all the time by changing down though) or 6-7k to get going.

Well If I was to do that the tdm would be screaming it's bollocks off constantly around town.

It is such a board question the best answer, go with what feels right.

Are you trying to go fast leave it in gear as long as possible before it hits the red line, are you going slow? Keep the revs low and smooth.

It's like saying how much should I lean the bike over. It al depends on the situation, Road/Bike/ Rider.

I do this too. But i usually change around the 10k mark.

Through town, if im not in a weird mood i suppose its about 4k. But have been known to rev the crap outta it in first or w/e.

On my SV650S I find the power drops off noticeably after 9k, this is usually confirmed by dyno graphs too.

However, now it's restricted, it's slow no matter what I do! Laughing.

For my bike (125cc single) it's anywhere from 6k - 9k / 10k (it's max) to change up. I say up to 9k because there are times when if you don't rag it up there in 4th then when you engage 5th gear you'll be going slower / start decelerating instead, as is the case with many bikes approaching the potential of their highest gear I imagine. Like hills! Grrrr, damn hills.

Surely this is a fucking wind up?

Confused

Why do people feel the need to ask the stupidest questions on this board lately?

If your riding hard you'll be letting the bike rev out more before changing up, if your pootling you'll more than likely be short shifting at lower revs.

I like the torque at the high level of my rev range. Redline is at 9500prm.
Peak torque is about 7000 and max power output (when it makes the most HP) 8500. So as its a small cc bike i keep it on the boil and change about 8000rpm. I say about but i rarely look at my clocks and go by feel. A good test for this is going uphill and keeping the bike pulling without labouring or over revving and changing up into the sweet spot.

I can only imagine how lazy, riding a 1ltr bike would make me. Wink

I think he sits there revving an imaginary throttle and making noises like the crazy frog. Then he gets drunk alone and cries.

...

At least that's what I imagine all bikers do currently not in possession of a bike?
