How good are these? heard good and bad things about them, just wanting to know any owners thoughts. Is it worth paying a bit more and going for the later Suzuki powered ones or are the Rotax ones good/better/worse? How usable would they be for a newbie off road?

In other words I have no real idea about these bikes so would like someone to just give me some tips regarding them. Main reason I am looking at them is for there relatively low seat height as I am quite short. I have also been looking into the xr400/600 and the drz400, anyone got any other suggestions of what to look at?

Oh my budget is going to be around £1500, might be able to go up a little too.

Whatever you do, heed this advice - GET AN ELECTRIC START.

You will get annoyed, you will be fed up, you will hurt and it will be frustrating when you fall and the bike stops having to rely on a kickstart only bike Thumbs Up

ive owned a couple of these, the suzuki engined ones. Quite reliable apart from niggly things like switchgear and other electrics. Not that light so not ideal off road, make a good fun commuter though.

I googled the R30 and came up with this

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikereviews/searchresults/Bike-Reviews/CCM/CCM-R30-2001-current/

A friends son has the Suzuki engined version and found it underpowered so had it bored out to 715cc and a better cam installed to make it more 'fun'.

Another friend had a CCM 644 enduro version and found it heavy and tiring on a long rideout. As for when it got stuck in deep mud when greenlaning up in mid-Wales,Will looked quite enviously at our bikes wishing that he had bought himself something a bit more agile. He now rides a KTM 450 like my one.

Bit heavy for off road.

What about a Pampera?

It's going to be used mainly on road so the off road thing is going to be once in a blue moon, plus I don't think there are massive green lanes around Cambridge I might be completely wrong though!

The lack of power sounds pretty disappointing though. And fancy a 4t right now, always wanted a larger 2 stroke but fancy a nice thumpy single right now Laughing

The CCM404 makes more sense for off-road as well.
It only loses a few hp at the top compared to the 644 engined R30, but a good few kg are lost. It does lose some midrange - but none of these are particularly fast engines.
The rotax engine is more perky, but less reliable in the bigger bikes.

Came directly off a drz onto an r30, then from an r30 onto a te610.

Would rank it te610, drz, r30. Seemed rather underpowered, handled nice, had really low pegs which was a bit strange. Will fit in a berlingo van if you let down the tyres.
