Hi. I have XJ600 in green. There are some rust patches on the frame, stands are badly rusted. It needs new paintwork.

How heavy is the engine?
Is easy to put the engine back in, is 2 people enough?

When I strip it and clean it from the rust do I have to use an undercoat?
I dont have a gun. I want to paint it metallic / gunmetal black.
I know that frame and swing arm should be powder coated but I am afraid the garage will charge more than the bike is worth.
Is there any good metal paint I can use? Something chip and scratches resistant.

What paint should I use on the exhaust pipes?

Most 600cc engines are about 60-65kg in weight, two people should be able to get that back in using a jack and bodging some stands etc.

I can't help with the paint Thumbs Up

i have taken the engine out of my divvy by myself. it wasn't easy with one person but do able.
it was very easy very with two people.
stick a couple of wooden blocks under the engine and a towel on the frame. make sure you take the oil filter off. it is next to impossible to get it out with the oil filter on. but with two people and the oil filter off very easy. slides straight out.

you can achieve a good finish with the rattle cans from halfords. however it can get quite expensive. i'll try and take a picture of the gpz500 that i have just resprayed in black

exhaust painting
why not just give the exhaust a good clean of all rust and polish using some wire wool or similar to remove all the crap then use a drill with a polishing bit on it and polish her up

I got the engine in an out of the pre diversion on on my own. Trick is to do it on level ground with some wooden blocks and a good jack.
To be honest if your just painting things you'll be better off with a small brush and some patience. If you put the paint on thick you won't get brush strokes. If you do you can always sand them off.

Exhaust will be fine, just a minor rust.
Manifold/down pipes are a pain the arse to keep clean. I clean them, then idles for a bit, they are black again Mr. Green

If you do strip the bike down and paint it then get some photos and stick them in a thread in Show and Tell.

I love reading about stuff like this and I'm sure many other people do too.

Thats fine. I love taking pics and uploading them on the net Mr. Green
But before I start doing anything I need to know how to do it, names of specific, tested and proven to work paints. I am still waiting for the opinion of the experts Wink

If you are going to the hassle of striping the hole lot down get in blasted and powder coated I doubt it will be much our than £50 which is what you would spend on the gear to strip and paint it yourself the finish will be better and much longer lasting only downside is you may have to replace the swing arm beaings.

I phoned few places in my area.
£120 to have it blasted and powdercoated.
£60 to get it powdercoated if it has been blasted already.

Pricey but I will think about it.

Now I want to see how much would it cost me to repair and paint the frame myself.
Can anyone recommend me good filler and paint I can use on the frame (something scratches and chips resistant)

if it is £60 to get it powdercoated. strip the paint yourself with nitromors. shouldn't need more than £10 in paint stripper.
you will need at least £60 in rattle can paint anyway

Thats right, 1L on nitromus costs £10. Would that be enought for the frame, swing arms and stands?
Does 1 layer of nitromus works perfectly or woudl I have to repeat 2 or more time to ge tsparkling clean frame, ready for powder coating.
Does it remove the rust as well?

What do you think of using hammerite black hammered finish paint?
I think 1L - £20 would cover everything.
It says direcly to rust but I would do little preparation. sand down the rust, dry it, repair it, sand again, premier and sand utnil even and then paint it.

Few years ago I was paining my fance with silver hammered finish hammerite. Easy to work with and I like the hammered finish a lot.
I think black hammered finish on frame It will look good with gunmeal / metallic black body

I've found the easiest way to remove/replace engines is with the wheels off and the frame resting flat on the ground. Then you don't have to faff about with lifting/supporting the engine and there's less chance of dropping it!

I've had the engine out of my GN twice, the first time it was on its wheels and it took me hours with a helper, second time wheels were off and bike resting flat on the ground, took me 10 minutes and i was on my own too.

Try it next time, you'll save a load of hassle for an extra half an hour's work Thumbs Up Very Happy

UPDATE

Bike is in parts now, only engine and wheels (thus forks as well) left on its place.
I decided not to take the engine off. There is plenty of room to paint the frame with the engine still on.

Questions:
Paiting
I am goint to paint the frame with hammerite direct to rust metal paint, however I am going to clean it from the rust first Wink
I have a large can of red premier oxide , should I give it a coat or two before final hammerite coat?

I want the paint to be more resistant, what lacquer should I use?

Cleaning, Polishing
I want to clean and polish the foot rests, exhausts and exhausts pipes. I got some wire wool, medium and fine.
What is the difference between a rubbing compound and an Autosol?
