You just messed the bit where she tried hitting me round the head with a fork slider... sorry, no photo's of that one!

Fork-Oil. Right. Couldn't make out the wt rating on the motul bottle. Just been over to busters to get some gaiters to hide the pitted sliders, had a chatp about viscosities.

We reckon that ATF is ABOUT the same as 'light' or 5wt, maybe a tad lighter. So I got a bottle of 10wt, 'medium'. See how that works.

But before we fit the seals, we have to paint the sliders. Before we paint the sliders, we got to mask them, and before we MASK them, we have to get the sheared screw shank out the mudguard bolt boss!

That's our next job. But Its a warm day, so I have just poured her a beer, and am having five minutes!

Before the cruiser was stolen I was hoping to sell it,so that I could buy a Kawasaki KH 125 that had a custom paint job.

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/odds%20and%20sods/TheJoker.jpg

But it wasnt to be as the bids got higher and higher on it.

So I asked Tef if i could have a custom paint job of a wolf cub on my tank....

ok fella`s as the bikes called the pup i would like a wolf pup done on the tank,
which 1 of these piccys would you think suit??

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/odds%20and%20sods/imagesCALU6AKR.jpg

some pics have been changed as I did a opps and deleted photo bucket and lost all pics
Ok

Well didnt do that much today...

First i put up a Gazebo with a bit of help from Tef,as then i can work in all weathers as it rained for 2 days

Then striped and cleaned 2 sets of forks, to find the best of the stanchions and sleeves, cleaned the sleeves with a wire wheel on the drill only managed to clean 1 set of them though as killed the drill Embarassed Whistle
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0873.jpg
Undo the top bolt on the fork leg before you take it off the yoke`s then undo the yoke pinch bolts to release fork legs, and remove the fok spring, sorry Tef wasnt fast enough to get a piccy, see the top bolt is loose in this pic
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0874.jpg
Empty the fork oil into a jar as it can be used for cleaning with a bit of petrol in it,pumping the stanchion to get out as must oil as possible ,Now turn the fork leg upside down and remove the allen bolt use a bar in the in the wheel spindle lug,and then another bar on the allen key for more leaverage
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0875.jpg
Remove the stanchion from the slider, turn the stanchion upside down as now the allen bolts out of the damper rod should just tip out
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0884.jpg
If you fish the allen bolt out of the bottom of the slider so you dont loose it, you can screw it back in the damper rod end cap,to pull it out
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0885.jpg
Uni-thread rod (M8 in this case! )is really useful to have.here used to push damper rod out the stanchion
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0886.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0876.jpg
Remove the dust seal on the slider with a tyre iron or screw driver
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0877.jpg
Use the screw driver to take out the circlip that was under the dust cover in the slider
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0878.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0879.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0880.jpg
Use the tyre iron to remove the fork seal turn it and lever round till it comes loose,as you dont want to damage the slider
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0881.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0882.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0883.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/forks/imag0887.jpg
look lots of lovely pieces, these all need to be cleaned
Except first i took the slider to tef so he could drill the sheared bolt out of the stantion from where the mudguard is bolted...
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0888.jpg
Centre punching a hole so the drill bit doesnt move off course
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0889-1.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0890.jpg
I had already cleaned this set of sliders, with my trusty drill and brush, and masked off the drain hole and top of the slider so when they are painted the paint doesnt go into them
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0891.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0892.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0893.jpg
With a small drill bit slowly pilot a hole through the bolt and the repeat with a slightly bigger drill bit
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0894.jpg
Hes good managed to leave some of the bolt so that it dont damage the thread
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0895.jpg
With a pair of long nose pliers he scraped out the remaining bolt
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0896.jpg
Then just used a tap to clean the threads up
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0897.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/fixing%20stuff/imag0898.jpg
One nice and shiny hole,oh and look it can still be used
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/odds%20and%20sods/imag0927.jpg
Murdered drill R.I.P
So then i had a go at sanding the bodywork down,by hand,any1 know an easier way as been told paintstripper eats at the plastic?
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/painting%20bits/imag0928.jpg
My sliders had their first coat of primer ,dont they look nice
OH and this morning a few parcles turned up Hmmmmmm goodies....................shineyyyyyyyyyyyyy,mineeeeeeeeeeeeeee Tef get your mits off my new shiney bits

anyway yesterday afternoon i got my frame and swingarm back yipppeeeeeeeeeeeee,Oh and they dont look like cheese so if your still interested in that frame get in touch and we arrange something.....

heres some piccys of when the frame came back

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0952.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0958.jpg

im so happy its back might be able to start something instead of washing-sanding-washing........

so it didnt get rusty again by morning i got Tef to put on a coat of primer onto it

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0961.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0965.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0970.jpg

Then got on with some other bits like taking the bottom cone from my bottom yoke what a pain in the butt that was had to put it back on to as Tef missed taking the bloody pic

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0975.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag0986.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1006.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1001.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1007.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1047.jpg

I Wish! Typical bludy predator, they always run down the lame ones first!
Like the big game film crew, camera-man gettin in close to get shots of the cheatah, sound man starts strapping on a pair of Nike Trainers....
ANYWAY, dear..... you got your frame back yesterday!
Come on show the good people what it looked like in the metal, and tell them all about the tedius 'little' bits & brackets you have been killing the rotary wire on with the new drill!

Well havent posted for a few days been to busy with stuff. We had Tefs kids for the weekend, so
took them out for the day on Saturday, after spraying the frame with another coat of black, and
gave it its first coat of laquer when we got back!
Last lot of pics I posted we'd just got the frame back from the blasters, and got the first coat
of primer on it. Spent a lot of the week adding further coats of primer, and hi-build, before
putting on the paint.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1046.jpg

starting to put paint on!
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1048.jpg

One of MANY coats of gloss!
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1049.jpg

Swing-arm too.
You know.... this bit of the project is about as interesting as watching paint dry! Another
reason I've not posted much!
Between coats of paint on the frame, I've been cleaning and painting all the little nadgery
brackets and bits, ready to go back on.
Even washed a bracket.........dont know how that got in my bike boxes....I asked tef what bit of
the bike it came from he said a cupboard.................... WELL I AM LEARNING
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/painting%20bits/imag1052.jpg

https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/painting%20bits/imag1054.jpg

Only real mechanics I've done, till today, is overhaul the back brake, or at least the drum bit.
Still got to do the pedal end.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1023.jpg
Removing the washer holding the brake shoes in.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1027.jpg
Levering off the old brake shoes.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1030.jpg
Withdrawing the 'cam'
The back-plate was then cleaned and painted with heat-proof paint, same as the front caliper, and
cured in the oven, before I started re-assembling it with the new shoes.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1034.jpg
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1036.jpg
Fitting the springs is fiddly. after much messing about, Tef showed me the 'trick'. You dont put
the shes together like they sit in the drum and try stretching them between the holes, you thread
one spring into the hole in one shoe first, then sort of fold the shoes side by side, to hook the
other end of the spring, THEN open them out like a book to the shape that goes on the back-plate.

Before fitting the shoes though, the cam needs copper-slipping and putting back in.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1041.jpg
Then the 'hinge' where the shoes pivot needs coppa-slip
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1042.jpg
THEN the shoes can go in. Tef showed me another trick. Rather than trying to pull the shoes apart
against teh springs to get them over the pivot & cam, fold them like a book, so that the ends are
hinging against each other, then you can wiggle the gap over the cam & pivot. EASY...... when
you know how!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Brakes/imag1044.jpg
and that leaves the Speedo & Rev-Counter.
I posted some wolf pictures and an idea for how to work it into a facia for the rev-counter,
before. Well we've been working on that one!
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/clocks%20and%20switches/spd_03.jpg
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/clocks%20and%20switches/tac_02.jpg
These are the new dial faces!
Well... we HOPE that they'll be the new dial faces!
We tried printing one on paper and putting it in to see how it looked....
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/clocks%20and%20switches/imag1101.jpg
Looks OK in day-light.....
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/clocks%20and%20switches/imag1104.jpg
But not so great when back-lit....
But the principle seems reasonable. Bought some Over Head Transparency film for the printer,
sanded down the original faces, and sprayed them with white primer, and we WERE going to see how
that worked....
Only Tef, printed them on the wrong side of the film and they all smudged!
So we have got to try that one again.....
Bloomin cheap-skate! ALL to save a few hundred quid on a custom air-brush tank and panels!

Looking *much* better than before!
When you 'high build' coated it, did you get the rusty bits near the spindle slot?

On the Swing-Arm? Theres still a little flash-rust in a few places in the frame. Lad that did it was quite 'considerate' & didn't rip it to bits. Swings & round-a-bouts when blasting. more you hit it, more rust you eat out but thinner the metal gets. It was a pretty good job.

And I think I know where your going with the Q, hi-bld is pourouse.

It got two coats of primer before she put the hi-bld on to smooth out the pitting.

Back to the bill. Budget has just about touched the grand!

Added to the list are a pair of fork seals & gaiters, now bought & paid for, and about £60 worth of paint! (though some of thats for the bike I'm doing, but she'll need more yet!)

Ecconomically, Aerosol Painting the frame is probably NOT the best way to do it for most. Blasting was £30, & they would have Blast & coated for £70.

We wont actually use £40 worth of paint on the frame, but close on. Reason for getting get to DIY it though is so she could see the frame in the metal & see layer by layer whats gone on it & KNOW whats underneath.

Whole 'ethos' of this build is to give her confidence in the bike, so her painting it this way means she is SURE about the metal under the paint and the amount of paint thats on it & can have confidence that the frame is sound & strong & WILL last.

Only trouble we're having is every time I tell her to LIGHTLY sand each coat down, she tries taking it back to bare metal! Maybe we WILL use more then £40 worth of paint on this frame!

I wasn't really going anywhere with that - I have not tried the stuff. I was just wondering about putting 'stuff' (whatever it is) on rusty metal. Fair play if they guy was not too savage with the blasting but rust has a sneaky habit of making new friends and cacking up your paint unless your primer is also a rust killer?

It is much apart from watching paint dry im not got that much to do ive just cleaned, sprayed and did my back brake yesterday and got the first coat of black on the frame and swing arm

Was hoping id be putting my forks back together today, but the weather yesterday stopped me putting the last few coats of lacquer on to the slider grrrrrrrrrrr

So hopefully that be done today.........well apart from we got Tef`s kids here for the weekend,so be taking them out at some point if Tef ever gets out of bed.... Just gone to put the next coat of black on frame and we haven’t got any again think the dogs eating it lol

I don’t mind doing the spraying now but im not confident enough to do the last coats so ill getting Tef to do that so it doesn’t look like a dogs dinner once finished

cant wait to get this finished its a pain in the butt chasing the dog away from the frame to stop him using it as a scent marker

pics to come once they load on to photo bucket

Living with an insomniac!
look at the post time. She typed that while waiting for the kettle to boil, after being out there probably early enough to make the SPARROWS grumpy!
Yesterday she woke me up with a coffee and the comment, "Just been the bank! It was bludy shut!" I waited for my eyes to clear so I could focus on the alarm clock.... it was half past eight in the morning.... and its a half hour walk BACK from town..........
This mornings anouncement is we are out of paint..... hmmmm...... she's probably been 'lightly sanding' again!
It'll have to wait until she finds a 24hr bank!
We have now FIRMLY hit the budget stops!
for the moment, anyway!

anyway, today I put my new head race bearings in and put the headstock back together, reassembled
the forks and fitted them.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1108.jpg
Drifting the bottom bearing onto the yoke assembly.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1111.jpg
Banging.... sorry, 'drifting' the bearing races into the head-stock.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1119.jpg
Tightening the head-race bearing pre-load nut with the special spanner!
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1120.jpg
The Center Stand, all fitted up, so I can prop it up once the forks and front wheel are on. Tef
wanted me to put washers between the stand and the brackets it sits between to stop it moving
about, but we couldn't find any big enough.
I had the bright idea of cutting down one of the old swing-arm bushes we'd taken out..... Tef
didn't laught at me.... found a saw and tried it! Worked a treat!
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1124.jpg
Propped up ready to fit forks.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1125.jpg
Forks going in
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1130.jpg
Forks in and clamped up on the lower yoke only. This is so that the stansion wont turn when you
come to put the fork cap back on.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1133.jpg
The fork oil added, after measuring out, being careful to get the same amount in each leg.
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1134.jpg
Tef, sticking two two-pence pieces on the top of each fork spring before we put the caps on.
Err..... OK.... yeah! I had to ask too!
It adjusts the 'Pre-Load' apparently, and he used to do this on the old TZ race bikes in the days
before bikes had multi-twiddle-able suspension.
He reckoned that TWO two pee coins would make the bike handle better..... I have NO idea why!
I DID ask if it would handle REALLY well if we went for a whole quid, but he just shook his head
and asked for the 17mm socket!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1135.jpg
which he got me to use to do up the fork-caps, after starting them in the thread for me.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Frame/imag1136.jpg
So, forks on, and all assembled, STARTING to look like a motorbike again! Bit of faffing to level
the forks in the yokes, and Tef cocked it up! He reckoned you had to leave one leg a bit loose,
then bounce the suspension to get the other leg the right height in the yoke..... it just popped
out the top on him! Ha-Ha! Bit of fiddling got them level, though, and then I could nip them up
and put all the bolts in.
Now looking at my bearing-less swingarm and wondering are we going to be able to find new bushes
for it!
And tonight I was just getting the engine ready to start and have a look what if anything needs
doing to that and get it all nice and clean ready for the new spocket............Tef said no to
an engine rebuild at the moment as it runs................spoil sport
Then he dropped the frame from the heap, on his foot.... swore.... loudly..... threw it accross
the garden.... and I decided to call it a day & sort some photo's!
But amongst them I found one of at an engine.......
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/odds%20and%20sods/imag1012.jpg
That's the one Tef has just 'done' for the bike he's doing......
He has told me to make 'mine' look like that..... I'm wondering whether to just nick his! He's
messed about with the ignition and carbs and stuff and got it running really nice!
My carbs were horrible! all glued together with gloopy-stuff!
https://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/carbs/imag1107.jpg
More Bludy Cleaning!
