So can you use them?
I can't for shit! I struggled every time to use a centre stand on a CG and almost died trying to kick start a YBR ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

Center stands are all about technique, even my Futura was a doddle once I had it sussed, although I do cheat and lift the bike off the stand whilst sat on it rather than from the side to avoid any risk of dropping it that way
Soso on kick starts, smaller bikes are no problem for me but I suspect a big bit of British iron would soon put me in my place ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

My YBR has no sidestand so I have to use the centre stand. Piece of cake really once you get the technique. Do you weigh less than a piece of paper or something? Kickstart isn't that hard either, but electric start is nicer! ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |

I learnt to use a kickstart when I was an 8 year old girl.
I see so many grown men trying to stamp down on kickstarts with all their brute strength - it doesn't work that way!
Technique, and watch out for any kickback
I struggle a little with centre stands, only because I've never used a bike regularly that has one. ____________________ CBR125|||GSXR400|||CBR400|||CBR400|||CB250RS|||GSXR750|||CB250RS

Try kick starting my Enfield bullet (and if you can't, you're going nowhere). Do it wrong and it kicks you back.
My mate retro-fitted a kickstart off an older model to his KLR 650. Didn't fit any form of decompressor though. It was entertaining to watch him, a 6'7" bloke weighing about 16 stone taking a huge leap in the air to land on the kickstart with his full weight and it go "bump." once.
It would usually take 5 or 6 such jumps to get it to fire up.
I'd suggest there is something wrong with said YBR if it wont start easily off the kicker. That said, it's much easier to kick start them if they are on the centre stand..
Rolling the bike forwards so the front wheel is up against a kerb/wall before kicking it over helps stop your kicking effort turning into forwards motion. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

If I couldn't use a kickstart I'd have issues riding my bike
Centre stands are fine on smaller bikes (up to 150ish kg), but not on bigger ones. Only tried a couple of times, maybe my technique is wrong or maybe it's because I weigh bugger all. |

Centrestand... never had any trouble with CB5 or CBR6 but the Sprint did elude me. But it was a really heavy bugger and I was really scared of knocking it over trying.
I'm fine with woofy little 2 stroke kickers, never tried anything bigger but I suspect I'd suck at anything remotely 'manly'.
A cg weighs the same as a bag of crisps! Maybe when you grow some hair on your balls you'll be able to manage. |

Centre stands are easy enough. My first rf900 had one for some reason (not std) and it worked fine. Just had to realise it was one smooth motion.
Kicking again was fine. Kicked started all of my big singles. TDC, twist of the throttle to squirt some go go juice in there and a big hefty downkick and it goes.

First part of my CBT nigh on 17 years ago was centre stand technique. It’s been working for me ever since. Only time I ever had a problem was getting the bike off the stand in a London bike park. The bay was single file and some joker had plonked his BMW right up against my front wheel. No room to roll off the stand. In the end I had to pick up the rear of my bike and kick the stand up. Thought I was going to skittle the whole line of bikes over.
Likewise been ok with kick-starts except for a mates Ducati 450 single. It kicked back on me once and spat me up in the air. It also tore a muscle in my mate’s leg. After that I lost my nerve trying to kick that machine and took to bump starting it. ____________________ 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |

Struggled with centre stands on CBT but once you 'get' it, it's easily. Just remember until you get the hang of it you might well be pushing down so much with your foot on the stand that your other foot leaves the ground... ____________________ Previous: 2002 Honda CB500 (sold), 2007 Suzuki SV650SK6 (crashed), 2005 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (sold). Some of my singles have only started from cold with the kick, when warmed up they will go again on starter, but when hot, it's difficult to start.
