Alright this is one for the techies Very Happy Please look at the attached screen dump.

My pc at work keeps locking up when performing some functions in AutoCAD (a drawing program). The file I'm opening is not large btw. The CPU usage looks to be flatlining at 100%. Could someone please explain to me what this means and what would remedy the situation - just so I'm armed when I approach the I.T dept....

Very Happy Please keep it 'low-tech' in the explanations please!

You may have been better off showing us the AutoCAD screen. Smile could be a bug in AutoCAD, a memory leak or something. Try upgrading it to the latest version. The CPU usage doesn't tell us a lot, apart from that you'd be better off with a faster machine!

What version of AutoCAD are you running??

Have you tried CTRL+ALT+DLT and closed any background programs you're not using? Using the 'msconfig' command under start/run can disable programs starting up.

What's the spec of your PC?

2000 LT

We've used the licenses for 2002 on other machines so I'm stuck with this one. (although it's fine as it is TBH) And I think the pc would run even slower with 2002.

BTW I've worked on much bigger files than this one with no probs before Confused I thought it may be the server I'm working on slowing it up - so copied the file to the hard disk to work on. Still no better Sad

Didnt think msconfig worked under NT??

Open the proccess window in task manager and see if any proccess other than auto cad is using too much processor time. I doubt its an auto cad memory leak because you would have noticed it a while ago. Definatley something else causing the problem. Also is it possible to try and open the file on someone elses machine? See if it does the same on theirs.

MSConfig doesn't exist in NT. Post a picture of the Task List Kris. A 333mhz machine isn't the speediest of machine to be running CAD.

Nothing open? your looking in the wrong window, your looking in the applications tab, go to the next one accross it says "processes" on it. There might not be anything eating up the cpu but there should *definatley be other stuff open in it. Have another look. And the spec of the machine isnt really relevant if youve only started getting this problem.

Hi

If it is running at 100% cpu then it is hammering something.

I would suspect the file is corrupt. Not sure about Autocad but I presume that some of the info is stored as complex equations, and that these are evaluated to produce the display on screen. My guess is that it has landed up corrupted and is trying to evaluate something that has no solution.

Short time check I would try loading it onto another machine first though.

All the best

Keith
