use a timing light?

If you have electronic ignition you are unlikely to have a timing problem.

You can roughly set up static timing if you have points.

Can only be set up with the engine running with electronic ignition as the position of the sensors dont tally with the final advance.

I would suspect an external wiring fault, faulty coil/lead/cap or a carburettor/injector fault before the ignitor. It may also be a misalignment of the ignition sensors although if they havent been touched this is unlikely. The ignitor may stop advancing if it is faulty but again this is unlikely.

Why do you think you have a timing problem?

It'll also help if you told us the make and model of the bike...
