What is "Carb Icing", and no jokes about cakes or other fine desserts please.

Also, anyone got any ideas why, on the way home tonight, my bike was whistling like it had a turbo. Quite a high note but not a squeal, and seemed to be when reving up and when it was coming down too(what is that called when the rev's are dying down?). It wasnt loud but i could hear it at low speed with visor down, not sure if was still at high speed because of the wind.

The petrol/air going through the carb cools it down. When its cold and damp outside this can mean that the jets get blocked with ice, hence no petrol gets through. And no petrol = .... ?

cbr got it quite a bit, on cold nights, just ran like a sack of shit, and stalled everywhere

way round it was a cheap heater in garage when you wanted to start so at least it was starting on warm air, then let the bike warm normally
then it would run fine when you took it out

but such hassle just for a ride!

Hi

My old FZ used to suffer from it badly. Would drop from 45mpg to 25mpg, and would not run below 4000rpm.

Basically the fuel being drawn from the carb takes alot of heat with it. Eventually the carb gets really cold and starts to freeze the water in the air going through.

On my old MBX125 I once had carb icing like problems, looked down at the carb and the outside was covered in frost.

All the best

Keith

Carb Icing is where you get the icing sug... ahh wait you said no jokes about cakes.

Yeh its just the carbs freezing up and causing a non starter or a sack of shite feeling, wont cause damage, can clear up when engine gets hot.

Heater idea is good to.

You can get stuff to put in the fuel to help stop it. Dunno if its any good tho.

Do injectors suffer from it as well?

Hi

The additives does work but is expensive.

Most Kawasakis direct some coolant through the carb float bowls to warm them up a touch. Kawasaki had a big problem with carb icing about 15 years ago and had to recall pretty much every liquid cooled 4 stroke they had sold in the UK to fit them with new carbs.

Injectors work at a hell of a preasure. Don't think they suffer from it.

All the best

Keith
