I drove over it the other day and saw the new notice.

They used to wave me through on the bike, but the lad in the booth told me that 'The Management' have told them to charge all bikes from now on.

Even the Mersey Tunnels don't charge bikes!

Getting 12p out of my pocket is going to be a pain in the backside, I might now use the Thelwall Viaduct instead in protest.https://www.thelocalchannel.co.uk/content/S3011380.JPG

Do what we used to do for Dartford crossing. Stop, slowly remove your gloves, search all your pockets slowly, find 12 pennies, drop them into the attendants hand one at a time, count slowly with the tip of your tongue showing, drop the last one on the floor.

Stop the engine, get off the bike, find the coin, pick it up, apologise, hand it over.

Get back on the bike, drop a glove, get off, pick it up, replace both gloves, start engine, shout goodbye, ride off.

I'll give it 6 months and you'll have a free crossing.

I was about to say the same thing, I can't access my change with my gear on so without a doubt I'd have to stop, switch the engine off, get off the bike, open the topbox, rumage round for my wallet, find a £10 note, offer that and say I haven't got any change...

And if it was on my commuting route I'd do this or something very similar every time - cheeky twats.... Rolling Eyes

Sneak under the barrier behind/alongside a car, speed into distance whilst saluting, success. Thumbs Up

12p to cross a bridge?

They says Scot's are tight but they no longer charge for any of the bridge crossings... Never mind 12p... Does the bridge exist in a previous decade when 12p was worth something?

Its a really odd amount to charge. Confused

Thumbs Up

It's between Warringotn and Salford.

The original stone bridge crossed the Mersey. The Mersey was diverted into the Ship Canal (see map) in the 19th Century and a second bridge was added to cross that.

The owners are Peel Holdings who own most of the area, including the Trafford Centre. I wouldn't have thought it was worth their while paying the lads who collect the tolls....

It'll be some weird EU subsidy driven thing where they have to charge something or they'll lose funding for an historic monument or sumsuch.

I'm a bit of a sad bastard in that I quite like things like bridges and stuff. Its a nice looking bridge, quite quaint as they say. I think its something that happens when you get into your thirties, you start watching things like Super Structures and The World's Biggest Boat etc etc etc on Discovery.

I'm not quite at the Ice Road Truckers/Trawlermen stage, this is still boring shit to me. I'll start looking at that stuff when I start listening to radio four and getting my keys ready to open the front door while still miles away from the house.

Thumbs Up

What thickness is the bridge?
Is it medium sliced or the full on toastie?

Bu-bum. Tish. Coat. Door. Gone.

The clifton suspension bridge near me charges 50p for bikers, really I never need to cross it so it doesn't bother me; but I still think its a joke. I remember coming across a road in Cornwall that wanted to charge about £3 for bikers to use the "scenic toll road", I found an awsome route either way so it didn't bother me..

Note the tail-back and the cyclist not paying a toll.

It would be a fair way to push up the gradient to the top!

12p seems a bit steep for a car, only 5p here:
https://www.janetomlinson.com/images/tollbridge/STTtollcostsign.jpg
It was actually only 2p when I lived there when I was 7!.. Seems it got increased in 1994, the money grabbing pigs!

They used to wave me through, even the first time, when I offered them (well, struggled to find) 12p.

It was probably just the blokes in the booth rather than official policy.

The fact that there's now a notice suggested that something had changed and the attendant confirmed it.

Legendary!

I'd give them the 12p just to watch someone do that...

Wonder if you could incorporate a pillion into that...like having the pillion get off take off their gloves... find 6p. then the rider gets off finds 5p... asking the pillion to root about abit for an extra penney etc..

They probably waved you through because someone ahead of you gave them a quid coin and paid for the next eight people to cross.

I was with two other trail bikes heading for the green lanes of Kent in the days when you still had to pay for bikes through Dartford bridge/tunnel.

I paid for myself and the two bikes behind and then rode slowly off onto the M25, waiting for the others to catch up (bikes have to wait for the barrier to drop and rise each time).

5 minutes later still no sign of my two mates, I am now doing about 15mph in lane 1 with lorries whizzing past me. Eventually the first of my two mates catches up with me and is nearly pissing himself as he tries to keep a straight face. Turns out bike number 3 had taken the barrier clean off it's hinges.

The guilty biker's version, " I shot through, saw the barrier coming down so I smashed it out of the way with my arm in a manly way to teach it a lesson."

The witness to the events version, "You shoulda seen the twat, he shot through the barrier, saw it coming down and tried to duck down with fear as his chest and arm broke it off it's shear pins, the tunnel police were all laughing at how scared he looked."

I go over this bridge every day to the land that time forgot called Partington 24p day ticket and the bridge is called the Cassandra crossing been paying since i started working in the area on the bike. Cycles seem to go free, so i stop at the booth take my glove off get my money and pay while all the cars que behind me Very Happy .
To be honest the old dear behind the booth says she tried to get bikes through free t save the hassle but they wont have it when i buy a day ticket in the morning on the way back i just shout the ticket colour and ride through.
Ive been told by locals that you are not paying for the big bridge but a piece of private land next to the toll both which has a tiny bridge over a stream or somthing, they own the land and therfore charge you for going over it.
