I just had cause to look at the cylinder of one of these. I was surprised to see that the piston runs directly on the plain alloy barrel casting - no coating, nothing. I've seen nitrided alloy barrels and that coating is harder than coffin nails - can't even touch it with a normal cylinder hone, have to use a diamond hone.

This has really surprised me, I wonder when they will start to suffer from worn-out barrels? Are any other bikes the same?

Hi

Would expect a soft alloy barrel to wear out in no time at all.

All the best

Keith

Fairly soon I'd wager.

Pretty incredulous considering they charge £4100 for the plastic fantastic monstrosities! Confused.

The Rossi ones, yes, but a new standard is like £3000

edit - still outrageous prices anyway...

New standard is £3999 I believe, our local dealership want £4039 for the standard and £4139 for the Rossi version.

I'm not joking Keith the barrel is completely un-treated and the piston looks like a piece from an airfix kit - it even has the little pimples on it no doubt where they snapped it from the moulding. It looks like it's die-cast!

Piston also looks like it has some kind of thin ceramic coating on the skirts. I guess it must have because there's no way I can see a plain alloy piston running on a plain alloy barrel lasting very long.

It is the rings I would expect to have chewed through the alloy.

Has this come from a running engine, or could it be one that someone has attempted to rebore?

All the best

Standard '09 engine never been opened before. A foreign object got sucked into the inlet and wedged under an inlet valve, which then suffered a piston-strike and got bent, so I stripped off the top-end. Inspecting the barrel I noticed a couple of very shallow dints in the wall so I put a 3-legged hone in it for about 5 seconds to knock-off any high spots. Marks are still there but very slight so I don't think they are going to be an issue. So long as it runs and doesn't smoke the guy's not going to care really.

Holy shizzle when did they shoot that price up Question

No longer a viable competition for the CBR125 then.. Last time I went to order one it was like 3299 with helmet and jacket... Laughing

So is it actually a case of alloy barrel vs steel rings? Shocked

Maybe its some new alloy which is harder than normal? maybe there is some fancy oil system in there to keep the whole thing lubricated to hell?

They do when fitted with aftermarket exhausts and lack of maintainance, oil HAS to be changed ever 1600 miles, they burn oil i believe but i might be wrong.

Marketing blurb IMO. This barrel has NO plating on it.

As for 'forged' pistons, well I supposed that forged could mean counterfeit Very Happy

The bike has done well over 20k miles but this is the second engine. the original engine ate itself at 18k miles from having the skirt fail on the fancy forged piston Very Happy

Nickel-plated barrels are harder than hell. You'll often still see the original honing marks on them after 20k miles of use. In comparison to a nikasil barrel, the walls of this one are soft as butter.

I did wonder if the piston was coated, but as Keith said the rings would still wear the barrel - I'll fetch some pics of the piston and barrel tomorrow.

Where was the second engine from, do you know? Could it be a recon engine, been siezed up or something and been rebored?

Ah good old NikaSil, be sure to use good quality low sulphur petrol and avoid constant short trips, even BMW had big problems with it and moved on.

The second engine was a stock engine taken from a stock bike. Bought from eBay. It had certainly never been opened or had any work.
