First of all I'd like to say hello, I'm a long time lurker but first time poster.

I passed my Mod 2 yesterday, bought myself a 97 Kawasaki ER-5 A1. I went for a 60 minute ride, stopped in a car park to adjust my mirrors and foolishly killed the engine, queue me running around for 20 minutes trying to bump start it without success (apparently they have a neutral lock, couldnt engage second with the engine off?).

I replaced the reg/rec with this: https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Kawasaki/ER-5_ER_500_A1/97/picture/Regulator_Rectifier/. I've re-charged the battery which indicates 12.6v, 12.3v when idling. The voltage stays at roughly 12.3-12.4 when revving. Tested the alternator output, this peaks at about 70v at 5000rpm on all three wires.

All the connections seem fine to the eye though I don't really know which ones to check and how to check them.

Could anyone offer some advice? The only thing I can think of is to check the reg/rec output, I'm not too sure how to do this.

Thanks
Nicholas

That voltage is pretty low.
I would always suggest fitting a new battery when a new reg/rec has been fitted.
Failing reg/recs usually take the battery out with them.
Thumbs Up

Have a look on the er5 owners club on the bikers oracle. They'll be able to give you all the info and advice you need.

Thanks for the replys, I've posted on Bikers Oracle also.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the battery has also been replaced and holds charge just fine.

Could anyone tell me how to check the output from the reg/rec?

Right guys, charged the battery up again and took some new readings, battery voltage was 12.6 and it stayed at 12.6v when idling however it dropped to about 12.2v at 4000rpm. I think this indicates a reg/rec problem, this part was just replaced. Is there any way to test the reg/rec on its own?

Sorted! Unfortunately I just didn't have the skills to fix it myself so I took it to a local mechanic, turns out it was just a dead wire!
