Varadero? really?

Hi all,

I'm looking into getting a bike at the moment, and was pretty set on getting a YBR125 for a year or so to get used to everything before upgrading. However, I sat on one yesterday, and it felt like I was sat on a tricycle; fair enough, I'm 6'4", but I don't think that's the bike for me any more....

So after looking on this forum, I've got quite besotted with the Honda Varadero 125 and have a few questions.

1 - Is it a good idea to get one if I'm only going to sell it in a year anyway? What I was originally going to lay out for a bike seems to be creeping up a fair bit (I mean I'm getting more and more dirty looks off the lass).

2 - Is 22k miles too many? I'm looking at this bike and wondering:

3 - Are Hondas really worth the money? I think I probably already know the answer to that, but I thought I'd ask to make sure.


Any advice would be greatly appreciated, oh, and i saw one on an 05 plate, 1685 miles, for 2450 quid. Is that a good deal?

They do attract a high price, but thats far too much. When I picked up the YBR I ruled out a Varadero (couldn't justify the extra £400) for £1200 on an 51 plate with 6k. Older ones won't be an issue so long as they've been looked after.

They're nice enough, but you have to bear in mind that if you drop it (which you will, even if it's only slow) it'll be expensive to fix. You also need to budget for either a paddock stand or a centre stand for it or checking the chain etc will be a nightmare.

That being said, assuming you don't drop it and you pay a reasonable price you should make the thick end of your money back.

I had one it was my first bike am 6ft 3 and tbh it was the right bike for me, kept mine for over a year and a bit if my memory is right. I used mine to commute through Glasgow and it was perfect, nice riding position, see over cars, a big bike so moving up to a CBR 600FY did not feel heavy just an increase of power. They are expensive and hold their value fairly well unless you buy from new.

I would recommend it as a first bike to learn on if your over 6ft and not a skinny fecker.

I can recommend the Varadero, they are at the pricey end of 125's but are a cracking bike, smooth, comfy, great visibility, average about 75mpg with a big tank, range is about 220miles normal commuting. Will sit at 70mph and in my opinion as its a big bike which often gets mistaken for a proper big bike it should help with the transition to larger bikes after passing your test. I have had mine for a year with no problems at all, and fully expect to get the bulk of my money back when I trade up after doing my das. At over 6' 1" this was the only bike I felt comfy on, go have a look and a sit on I'm sure you could haggle a bit off the price if you liked it.

If you fancy a 70 mile jaunt along the A6 (I assume you're in Preston ) then there's a nice low mileage '08 Varadero (with top box) in Penrith Motorcycles. Saw it the other day when I popped in for a battery charger.

That one for £780 looks like a right bargain, wish that it was a bit closer to me up here in the People's Republic of Prestonia (how did you know that Capt Castle?).
