I thought nuclear was just taking off.

Ah well, I was looking forward to a nuclear disaster and living in the zone as a stalker, killing mutants and enemies.

Don't worry... we still need nuclear power for cloudy days.

Hi

Reading the comments at the bottom it seems that the study included subsidies on both, while counting the cost of decommissioning the nuclear plants as an extra (when a fee for that is already paid). The solar industry is heavily subsidised.

Also unsure as to whether they included the costs of disposing of solar panels at the end of their life.

All the best

Keith

The nuclear industry in the US is very tiny and very very safety conscious, making things relatively more expensive. The US also has much better sunlight than we will ever get in europe.

I disagree with those trend lines, the fact that 1 is the pure inverse of the other suggests its just a guess on their behalf. Nuclear is going up in price, as is everything else. Solar is coming down in price as it's only recently been invested in seriously, but that trend will level off fairly soon as the physical limits are reached. The graph trend line shown in that article suggests solar power will soon be at zero, followed by negative cost Laughing

Solar is alright but isn't very consistent and doesn't work well over large distances requiring substations everywhere, the construction and maintenance of which are probably not being taken into account.

Who funded the report?

Reports like this are nearly always funded by people who have a vested interest in a particular aspect of the subject.

If this was funded by www.solar-panels-r-us.com then I would be highly suspicious of the findings!

Just because it's come out of a university doesn't make it unbiased and objective.

Uni funding very frequently comes from private companies who will only fund it if it's done in a very specific way. This could mean "Comparing the best case solar with worst case nuclear" and doesn't make it trust worthy!

Good point Thumbs Up

See here: Tree Hugging Hypocrisy
Near the bottom of the report.

Quote:
LET THE SUNSHINE IN? SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES

The main problem with solar energy arises from the use of large quantities of arsine and phosphine in the manufacture of solar panels.

It is estimated that each 10MW/year production of flat-panel III-V modules requires about 23 tonnes of arsine a year.

The quantities required in flat-panel designs could present great risks to the environment. Arsine is almost as toxic as methyl isocyanate: in 1984, the accidental release of 40 tonnes of methyl isocyanate at the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal killed 3,000 people and injured 200,000 more.

Solar panels are a toxic time-bomb. They may provide clean, green energy, but manufacturing them involves a witch's brew of toxic chemicals, the consequences of which may be dire once they end up in landfills - or slightly earlier if any eco-houses burn down.

But in itself there are different types of solar, PV panels and also heliostats which work on the solar oven principle. These types don't have a finite life the boiler unit does though!

Anything has a limited life. But solar stuff generally is delicate and degrades with age. Few years back some electric suppliers had their solar packages listed on their web sites. Even including the subsidies they would not cover their installation costs over their specified lives (even ignoring interest on the purchase price).

This.

Look at the Severn estuary for example, it has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. That tide goes in and out twice a day, every day, for the rest of time. Why hasn't that been harnessed yet?
