Hi all, my son has got a 1986 DT 50 MX. He was out for a spin when the engine started loosing power and died on him, he noticed that he had no 2 stroke oil left in the tank(numpty) and pushed the bike home. I have had a look at it topped up with oil, bled it through but the bike wont start. Looking on futher got a good spark from the plug but after kicking for a while there seems to be no fuel going to the engine. I have stripped the carb and reassembled it. No blockages and fuel runs into it ok. Tried to bump it and still the plug is dry. Any help would be great. Thanks
Dave. Yes he is a plonker

Will almost certainly have done some damage to the piston and bore, though that doesn't explain why fuel isn't getting through.

Would that not be because the rings might be busted, therefore no vacuum to draw fuel through the reed valves?

You need to remove the barrel to take a good look for any damage. Shouldn't be much work, remove the exhaust and sparkplug, then 4 nuts on the top of the cylinder head. Lift the barrel up slowly and when there is enough room stuff some rags in the hole in the crankcase, just in case. Only then should you lift the barrel completely free of the piston.

Just be aware that if the rings have broken that they may have fallen into the crankcase.

Could be. Though if the rings had broken, you would have expected a seizure.

Top end definitely needs to come off to assess damage. It might be possible to get away with a careful clean up of the piston and bore surface with emery cloth/wet & dry paper. Happened to me once on my RXS100 and the motor survived. Top end went on to do about 20,000 more miles Laughing

As said, strip it and see. The good thing is that's an extremely simple engine to work on, and parts are cheap.

This is why it's always a good idea to have a nice simple engine, particularly in your early days on the road Wink
