.. god I hate that job!!! Mad

It is so tricky to get to the CCTs, especially the front one!! ... that and the front rocker cover means you have to take 3/4 of the bike apart to get to it!!! Thumbs Down

Still, I have set the gaps so huge now they will never need doing again ... shame it sounds like an old taxi now ... Embarassed

Anyone else set the gaps LARGE (i.e. slightly larger than even the upper end of the suggested gapping) to try and increase service intervals?!!?? Thinking

I think he is getting at the fact that setting them too large is just as bad as them being too tight.

Set them to the upper limit of the of the manufacturers guide but not over it.

It is not as bad as too tight ... too tight is BAD, and it will get worse ....

Too large makes very little odds (we are not talking a mile here, just an extra copula-thou' over the top to eek out the service intervals a bit more) ... and will only get 'better' over time.

A bit like buying some trousers that are too large for a kid to 'grow into' Wink

are the valves operated directed by the rocker arms and tappets or are they shim and bucket operation ? Your valve timing wil be out if the clearances are set too wide but not to a great degree but wide clearances can cause damage to valves and rockers particuarly the rocker and tappet setups, the clearances are there to allow for expansion when the engine warms up so yours will be too loose when warm.

Gaps too big = noisey, insufficient oil at any point or too large may cause parts to chip / crack

Too tight = Valves held open and burning out, parts rubbing to hard and wearing down too fast.

Generally speaking too large is better than too tight. Clearances becoming too tight is likely a result of valve and seat wear, and is probably expected in a newer bike. Clearances getting bigger is likely due to cam & shim wear and is more common in older bikes from what i've seen.

I don't think there is anything wrong with making the clearances a little generous, but i wouldn't risk going too far overboard.

by a tiny fraction.



and having massive clearances wouldn't change the valve timing one single bit. the valves just wouldn't open very much and it'd be noisy.

sv is shims iirc?

crap tastic job. tappets / locknuts ftw

your valve timng would be altered very slightly as the cam is making contact with the rocker arm slightly later due to the increased gap

doing clearances on a bucket and shim is such a faff its worth trying to set them large imho ...

as for all this doomsday about out of spec (large) meaning lack of oil and damaging valves. ... I suggest you guys think more clearly about what is actually going on in there Wink

I Was always taught with my Kawasaki, as well as my Triumph 1500 roadcar to go for the middle of the manufacturer's specified range. Reason being, if you slightly over or under cook the clearance from that point, you should have a bit of leaway so it doesn't end up overly tight/loose.

I should also do the valve clearances on my pug, but with 175k miles on it and a bucket/shim arrangement, i really cba.. Embarassed

going for the middle will give you the best chance of staying somewhere in spec, but hardly the most efficient way of doing things from a revisit point of view Wink

at the end of the day we are talking ~0.1mm difference here in a what 25mm 'lift'? .... it's not going to make any odds Wink
