Hi

I am getting a bike soon, was going to get an NSR, but the insurance on it is stupid amounts of money (as I am only 17 etc)

I have had a look at KMX / DT etc, and the insurance quotes for those are more in my price range.

Has anyone ever had one? I am planning to take my test early next year (April / May time) so don't want to spend loads on a bike with a lot of plastic, as this will be my first bike (so I will probably drop it, and don't want to spend loads fixing it up Confused ) and when I pass my test it will be sold to get a 400, so again don't want to spend loads on a bike I won't have for long.

Any info would be appreciated, any know roughly how fast it goes? What is it like handling wise? And would you recommend it as a first bike? Forgot to ask - I presume these will be pretty reliable and last (so long as you look after them properly) as they are designed for off road? Is that the case or are they just designed for looks?

Cheers

Chris

NSR isnt much to insure, its only something like group 7.
mines costing me £200 to insure.

good side of 80mph on both of them
handling, there crossers, so dont expect what you would from a road/ sports bike.
but generally good start of bikes, both can take a hammering and still work.

De-restricted, yes.

In the form the DT comes from the dealer is will top out at 65mph. Easy to de-restrict though, there's a plate in the exhaust you have to remove.

I have a mate at work almost finished re-building and re-fairing a DT (I think its a DT, ill check) He recons there is about £200 worth of fairing gone onto it and he said he wants bout £500 for it.

And there is another, same but different, this one not road legal and no fairings.

I have the details kicking about here somewhere because one of my other mates was thinking about gettign a bike.

Where do you live? Obviously if its out of the country it is not going to be worth it for you (Skippy suggests Oz) If you live in the UK then Ian lives up in Darlington (North East).

The same type of exhaust restrictor as in the NSR?
Do you know if it has the carb intake restrictor as well?

PJ - I do live in the UK, but am from Australia Smile

I live in Milton Keynes if you know where that is? I might be interested, getting the details can't hurt, it's just that I have limited transport to get a bike....

Hi

Depends on the model of DT. Think most were just restricted by leaving the power valve servo off and clamping it in the low rev / power position.

Think the KMX is restricted in the exhaust. MTX is virtually impossible to fully derestrict but a decent exhaust will do most of the job.

All the best

Who did you insure with because mine is up at the end of the year?

No.

To de-restrict a DT you need to have some sharp cutters and be able to weld Smile

It is a plate in the silencer/box bit near the exhaust outlet on the engine, remove this and you will be away.

I do not know if there is a air intake restritor like the UK NSR, noones ever mentioned one so I would assume not.

dt's rock but it ant easy at all to de-restict properly, resticted by exhaust and the powervalve. early ones wernt and would be the ones to get. Later ones had the powervalve servo re-moverd and the latest one have the sevo but its resticed movement i the cdi which is imposible to get rid of i think.

I would be a tot buddy,
i'm 18 and just had my second years no claim come through.

Last year @ 17 with 1 NCB it was £230
This year
18 with 2 NCB is £200 and a few pennies and a bag of wine gums.

its an older unfaired NSR (unfaired cheaper)
Faired i was probably looking at £300 ish.

But i'll save myself the £100 and knock a few mph of top speed Wink
