For the first time in 14 years of driving / riding I ran out of petrol today.
It wasn't till I fumbled with the fuel tap that I realised that it was ,and always had been since getting the bike, on reserve so was bone dry!
Thankfully pulled up near a petrol station, the fact that I had to run across 8 lanes of traffic was another thing!
Hands up, who's run of of fuel and looked a right muppet walking back with petrol can in hand?
The moral of the story being if you think you can get a few more miles from the tank, don't ride like a twat and be heavy handed on the throttle. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

Its worse when you think you've run out of fuel, but it turns out to be the kill switch.
Not that I've done that at all... ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F

Ok, well if were into embarassing fuel stories...
When I was riding my 125 a couple of years ago it died on me and I pulled up on a petrol station forecourt. Petrol guage read 1/4 tank so went for the electrics. AA man turned up and did the same for 1/2 hr before we discovered that the gauge was stuck and I'd ran out of fuel. |

When I picked my bigger bike up I dropped off the 125 with the guy. I filled the bike up on collection and headed out with him for the day to get used to the bike. Filled it up for the journey home (150 miles) and headed down the motorway.
Having a laugh on the bike I sporadically hammered it and cruised at a steady 80 lots. Hit the A3 heading towards Portsmouth the bike started burbling and chugging and my first thought was a break down and was about to call the guy and ask him for suggestions.
Over to the side of the road and nothing was getting the thing started. There was definatly fuel in the tank as it sloshed about a little . Then I tried switching the fuel switch to reserve and the bike roared back to life. Needless to say I pottled down to the petrol station feeling a little silly. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

Yep, done it - twice .
I had replaced the fuel tap on my TZR250 but was as usual rushing to get it finished without soaking myself in petrol. I managed to cross the normal and reserve lines to the tap .
When I first ran out it was litterly approaching a fuel station so I coasted in and filled up - never bothered to check the tap .
Next time, it was a warm 33 degrees day. I had passed a station and conked out some mile and a bit down the road. Switched to reserve, sod all. Looked in tank, bollocks thought I, there should be petrol, it wasn't on reserve .
Pushed it, on a slight incline for the full mile and a bit. Contemplated suicide a couple of times due to the heat and the fact i was utterly knackered!!!!! Luckily the TZR250 is pretty light compared to many bikes. Should have jogged the mile, got a wally can and job done but I didn't want to leave the bike on a small country road unattended hence the "push" of shame .
Got home, checked the fuel lines, realised my error, swore, threw things, kicked myself - vowed never to make such a stupid mistake again . ____________________ Yamaha TZR250 - love the smell of TTS!!!!

even worse is running out of petrol & not realising that lack of fuel is why your bike conked out...& then proceeding to half strip the bike down, taking the carb off, spark plug out etc.
25mins later i discovered i had forgotten i to go to petrol station that week.
cheers,
GAZ
ps ; done it in the car as well, had just bought it, had a quick look at the fuel gauge & it was 1/4 full & i saw what i thought was a light, so was waiting on light to come on before refuelling.
needless to say, it wasnt a fuel warning light, it was a black screw.
was my 1st day in a new job as well. got there sweaty, dishevelled & stiking of petrol:oops: |

Fuel light came on, bike spluttered just before the petrol station so I filled up the tank feeling all happy that I made it. Went in to pay, got to the kiosk only to find my wallet was empty and I had no debit card on me either ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

Does running until empty cause any issues with clogging .. like i used to hear you can do with a car ..
Although me having a plastic tank, makes me think i would suffer less from any clogging issues ...
Also is it just bikes with carbs that can clog up due to sitting residue .. ... ____________________ Fuk um !! |

The real walk of shame is when you've just done some 'spirited' riding past a group of cars & then they pass you a few miles down the road as you're now pushing your bike.
That happened to me, a van i overtook went passed when i broke down & honked his horn as if to say 'You didn't get far, twat' |
