Hi everybody, I have a 1998 sad and all was fine until a ride out last night, I went to change to 6th gear and there was a clonking and grinding noise and no drive in 6th gear, from then on there was rattling in every gear like the chain was loose, I pulled over and noticed my chain was rather loose, I have since tightened the chain and the rattling is still there, sounds around front sprocket area, I have very little mechanical knowledge but any ideas or advice would be much appreciated, thanks

the front sprocket is probably worn out.

Take the front cover off and have a look (if unsure, post pic).

Yes - the chain will be flapping about - it might even be missing enough teeth that the sprocket spins in the chain under load?!

Get in there and have a look-see is the only way to know!! Thumbs Up

Do you have the noise in neutral, if so it must be the box or primary drive IMO.

Roy.

A sudden noise, I suggest it's probably a broken bearing.

If the noise is in neutral it could still be the C&S just because the bike is not in gear doesn't mean the c&S won't be turning if it is rolling along, does it make the noise when the bike is stationary or only when it is moving?

If it makes it when stationary my bet is cam chain tensioner, I believe they are a week spot on these bikes. Should be fairly cheap and easy to fix.

If it happens when moving I'd say C&S it could be bearing but then crunch rather than rattle.

Agreed, but when I mentioned neutral I automatically assumed that the bike would be stationary, if not, all bets are off.
A camchain tensioner problem wouldn't cause a gear loss though.

im with the above check the front sprocket, could be its hooked and missing teeth.. even in neutral my rear wheel moves when the engine is running (albeit slightly)...

and might be worth removing cam chain tensioner and replacing the spring, then tend to shorten over time due to pressure, and only a few quid from a dealer... i'm doing mine...
