I would save a little bit more so you don't end up "risking it" without gear and such for extended periods of time.
I got myself a CG a month ago and here is a basic breakdown of how much it cost me -
£90 for the CBT
£625 for the bike
£15 for tax if you need it (I did )
£200 for insurance
£250 ish for gear (helmet, gloves, pants, boots, jacket)
This is the important bit. If anything, get a cheaper bike and better gear. You will probably come off while learning and then you're two up, cheaper repairs if no fairing etc, and you'll be in a much better state with gear on. Watch videos of MotoGP/BSB tumbles to see how much the gear helps, if the same sort of thing happened in t-shirt and jeans they'd probably be missing limbs now.
You might be able to save a bit preowned, but think a little bit of the fashion part, daft as it sounds would you wear a second hand coat and jeans?
£100 for bits and bobs such as -
engine/chain oil, a few tools, spark plug, lock+cover (with seat bag to carry them), manual
£100 for petrol (yes it's a 125 but when you get it you'll go random places just for the fun of it)
So all in, about £1400, and you would be well advised to set aside some for maintenance and if things go tits up - I would say £100-200 is enough for a little 125 unless the engine explodes or something daft.
Oh, and make yourself some L-plates out of wood or thick cardboard and laminate them, the rigid plastic ones are utter shite and snap every 300 miles. |

I'm assuming you would only be getting third party insurance as to me it seems daft to go fully comp on a £600 bike (especially since it costs the earth for us little ones).
If so then you would both need to be insured and it will probably cost a fair bit. Two seperate policies would be 200-300 each on a little bike like a CG, if you name him on your policy it will probably be cheaper but I suspect he will have to pay at least a hundred a year insurance.
on the waiting until June, but you are right, most people respect 'proper' bike riders a lot more than scooters. Mostly due to 'ped bois' and the middle aged men in dayglo jackets with a open face helmet (WTF?). |

You have a VERY long time to figure out what to do, and save up the pennies to do it, between now & next summer..... if you want to go for a 125.
As for the ped-bio's.... just 'cos you have a ped, dont MAKE you a maniac..... plenty of maniacs WITHOUT peds.... plenty of perfectly sane people with peds....
If you dont like thie ida of one.... you dont have to have one. No compulsion.
BUT do give a moped a bit of thought.
You dont HAVE to have a day-glo bee-in-a-bean can hairdrywer with wheels; there's plenty of alternatives, If you want to be different, AND there are propper 'motorbike' style 50's with gears you can ride on a moped licence.
Admitedly most of them are either very old, or very expensive, but if you hunt around for something like a DT50, or AR50 or similar, they are about, and would mark you out from the lads on schooters.
There's also the old-fasioned step-through moped; a two-stroke pedal & pop like a Thomas or Honda Melody (Bit girlie & Twist & Go, but they do the job), OR....
My favoured option, Honda C50. Big wheels, sort of step-thru styling, but three gears, centrifugal clutch, four stroke engine.
Dont look like a scooter, OR a 'toy-50'... looks like what it is; basic utiliterian commuter moped.

Its a grown up bike, you'd more often see a balding old fart or middle aged women in open face hat & yellow over-trousers, than some style conciouse 'kid'.
Most popular motorised vehicle EVER built, I believe, its a cult and GENUINE classic bike.
The ORIGINAL bus-queue beater; becouse its SO cheap to run.
WORTH A THOUGHT.
Get yourself started now, do your CBT, and start building up your kit, while you get some road-miles under your belt.
And make a statement in the bike you choose to conciousely NOT do the typical 'teen' thing. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

10 months isn't too long but still, stick the battery on trickle charge, drain all the fuel from the tank and the carbs, if you can find a stable way of having both wheels off the floor then do so to save causing flat spots on the tyres (or rotate every month of so) and store in a dry place.
That should be fine for that length of time.
To be honest though, there is always another bike, there are thousands of 125cc bikes for sale, but you only want one. The odds are in your favour Don't rush things. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |
