I'm of no use. I've never dabbled with anything that 3 in 1 penetrating oil can't solve Sad

Right at work i've been given a set of Victorian gates to repair.

There is a what I presume to be a mortice lock at the bottom of one of the gates. The bolt is about 3inch by 1inch and it is all jammed up.

I have the keys to it and have been told, to repair the lock, by stripping it down and cleaning it up.

I know there are a few amongst us who play around with lock picks and such so could someone please give the gist of what i'm going to be attempting.

Thanks in advance.

Well, your first best bet would be to take a look at the MIT guide to lockpicking, because it's a good starting point. :edit: - look here. Then we could go with googling 'mortice lock diagram' - they're not all the same internally.

Finally, there are several locksmith/lockpick shops online, and they usually sell practice locks, which have got perspex sides, so you can see what you're doing. I'm not suggesting that you shell out for one, but it'll give a decent idea of what's in there.

As for picking it, well it's technically possible to do it with a few pushbike spokes, but it's a pig to do if you've not got much practice at this type of lock (like me, unfortunately).

Liberally douse it in penetrating oil, leave it a day or so, tap all round, repeat the process. Try the key. I don't believe it'll have masses of steel/iron inside, so while it will corrode, it's not going to rust into a single lump.

Hope that's of some help. I repeat - I am far from an expert when it comes to mortice locks. I'm much, much better at Chubb-type locks.

Is it full of paint? this needs to be cleared.
then loads of WD40, be gentle with the keys, I presume they are brass ones.
make sure that the mortice is straight and not splayed out at the end. Gentle taps at the end of the mortice as you turn the key if it is sticking out. make sure it is clear all around the plate if it is inside the lock. Sometimes there are screws on the side or base of the lock that can be undone to get to the mechanism.
Just be gentle.

any pictures?...

I'd suggest the dousing in WD40 route and trying the key, also a few taps with a hammer shouldn't hurt it too much (maybe a soft edged hammer?) Are you able to make a copy of the key in a harder material at all?... If the original key is brass it may break like a mo-fo if you try to turn it too hard..

A client has contracted your company to do repair work to valuable antique gates and they give the job to the apprentice who has to ask online how to do the job.
Tell us who you work for so we never trust them with any work in the future.
