I know some sensible people will always check them, but I dont and I'm sure some of you lot dont either.

I've been meaning to for ages, and I just did and got a nasty surprise.

It seems that every month, I have been paying £10 to "shopperdiscounts." It seems that this started when I booked a flight last year, so thats about £120 they've got off me.

I think there was probably a thing on the flights website that said do you want to know about money saving offers, but I dont remember it mentioning a charge.

So those of you who havent checked your bank statements for a while, go do it. You might be surprised at what you are signed up to pay for.

I dont get bank statements. Since my bank is based in Northern Ireland and I'm now based in Portsmouth I have to rely on this interweb thingy to do my banking.

I check every week though just to make sure the family tax credit is going in and the bills are coming out.

Turned off my bank statements a couple of years ago, I just check online ever so often, normally at least once a week. Wish I could turn my credit card statements off too.

I hate banks. I put a cheque in for £400 and they kept it because I'm in my overdraft (Despite me paying £12.50 per month for my account with an overdraft). Rolling Eyes Fuck you Barclays.

Mine are only about three pages long so I read them when they come.

Check online banking towards the end of the month to see how overdrawn I am.

A close family member of mine moved out of a rented flat into another a few years ago. After living in his new flat for a year or 2 discovered he'd still been paying rent on the previous flat.

He was very lucky as the landlady had been putting it aside for him and he got over £12k back in a lump sum!! Laughing

I check mine every now and again online but generally know what's coming and going anyway... Thumbs Up

I very rarely check mine tbh, as there's normally no money in there - though have got a bit more careful over the last couple of weeks as the good lady noticed on her last statement that there had been a £270 cash withdrawal off her account...from Jamaica.

Luckily she had spent on the card in the UK on the same day, so there was no question that it was fraud and the money's been refunded - but it still shows how easy it is to be ripped off.

A couple of months ago, I chucked some fuel in my bike at a local petrol station, and my card was declined when I went to pay. I had the cash at home (5 minute walk away), so I said to the cashier that I'd leave my bike there and come back with the cash in ten minutes. They were trying to insist that I left my debit card instead, and insisted that it was in fact "the law" that I did so - when I asked them what particular part of "the law" they were referring to they couldn't give an answer funnily enough Rolling Eyes

I think that they were a little taken aback when I concluded the conversation with "get fucked"....though I did come back ten minutes later, as promised, with cash in hand.

The childish side of me may have paid in pennies though, rather than using the ten pound note I had at home as a result of the previous interaction - and that member of staff isn't there anymore Wink

Amen to that... £140 in text books and lab equipment in the first three days. Add onto that two lectures in freshers week and a maths assessment for homework...

I thought student life was meant to be cheap/easy!!!

You have to buy your own lab equipment?

We had to buy our own lab coats (£20), and the microbiology lot had some £40 dissection kits that they were told were essential, but actually were never used, so I presume that's what you mean by lab equipment? Anything else and I'd be upset! Textbooks....wouldn't bother with them to be honest, I'm sure your library will have the latest editions in multiple numbers, so just borrow them, hell, you can chalk up £20 worth of late return fees and still be £70 better off!

Last november I went to buy some groceries at the local Coop, the card got refused. I had to go home and check and there was over £300 worth of bank charges. An overdraft i asked for hadn't been added on and I'd been charged three lots of £100ish.

Had to phone up but all they could do at the time was increase my OD. Funnily enough the guy didn't need authorisation for that, but did to get the charges refunded. Ended up taking a bout four weeks and in the meantime, the charges rose to about £600 and my over draft kept having to be raised because of it.

I check once a week now.

Isn't horrible though when you go to the cash machine and you don't really know how much you've got, so you err on the side of caution and think of really low estimate. When you press the 'show balance' button and your heart either sinks or soars...

Its the little things when your my age...

Hey,
I check mine 2 to 3 times a day. I have a spreadsheet showing what should be coming out and how much i have available to spend. I can honestly say i know how much money i have down to the last penny.

I've always been good with money and the only debt i have is my mortgage.

Cheers,
Shaun.

I do all my banking online, have no paper statements any more.

I have 6 accounts in all, all with HSBC and I'm always transfering money between them. So I'm logging in maybe 2 or 3 times a day.

I was properly sh!t with money until a few years ago. Massive credit card, overdrafts etc... I'd never check my account and just hope there would be money in there when I went to get some out of the hole in the wall etc...

Now, all bills are paid by DD on the 1st of each month and I keep an eye on ballances all the time making sure we always have money available. And I actually quite enjoy it! Confused

So, I have.....

Joint account - All bills and general spending from this account. Soon as we are paid I transfer almost all money out other than what we need and we run it in overdraft. This way if any money is taken (cloned cards etc...) then its the banks money they are taking, not mine! Smile

Saving 1 - Long term savings money I wont touch (unless I crumble and go for that 1098 I've always wanted).

Saving 2 - Short term that I transfer money to when we are payed, then back into the joint account when it's needed. This helps to budget on a weekly basis.

Sole account - Used purely for paypal transfers back and forth, so ebay sales and purchases etc... When this goes over a certain amount in credit I transfer it to savings.

Credit Card - Used for large value purchases only and paid off each month in full. So we won't buy anything unless we know we can clear it.

Share dealing - Not used at the moment, I sold up a few months ago what I had.
