My mother being a sensible old bat wants to know what bikes are recommended for the 33bhp limit? She already knows of the CB250's and the SV650 but what else is there? (He says as she peers over my shoulder)
Oh and reasonable on insurance...
AND fuel economical...
There goes my two-stoke racer idea... >.>
AND easy to get parts she says...
NAG NAG NAG! SO on and so forth.

Sv650 is not 33bhp more like 70.

You can own any bike you want as long as it is restricted down. Most bikes have kits.

As for insurance cost, things like CB600F, SV650(S or F), Bandit 600 or other 'commuter' type bikes are quite cheap. Most touring bikes are too, for me to insure an ST1100 is roughly the same price as the SV650S I own (£250 TPFT?), however such bikes won't move at 33bhp.

Anything with "RS", "S", "XR" or similar in the name will rape you on insurance.

Anything from the big four (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda) are going to be super easy to find parts for cheaply.

HTH. Thumbs Up!

The 'taking' to restriction is mostly bollocks in my opinion. Any sub 600 bike will 'take' to restriction well Hornets are a solid bet or a Triumph Speed Four if you want something with a decent (sporty) running gear.

I reckon the bikes I've ridden that have felt not so good restricted have probably been because of high gearing, but possibly also just because I had ridden the same bike unrestricted before.
For instance an R6 will hit getting on for 70mph in first, while an older CBR maybe 50mph.
Make both of them limited to 33hp and the one that's almost 50% higher geared in first is going to feel slower. That's like pulling away in fourth on a bike designed to have 33hp from the off.

Of course it's quite easy to decently change gearing to be more suitable.

Oh and yes, err the SV650 is an ideal '33hp' bike mum Wink.

Depending on your budget it could be worth checking out the Hyosung GT250, GTS250, GTR250 and GV250...

If you can find a decent one a Honda Bros 400 makes about 32bhp at the wheel.

However they are so old that finding a good one is somewhat of a task.

When I had a Speed Four it was 33bhp for the first few months and due to being fuel injected was just a throttle restriction (only opens say 33%) so bike didnt feel that different.

Like said most will take it fairly well but something less sporty will be cheaper on insurance so you should base your decision on how much you can get insured on different bikes Thumbs Up

This is the problem with the majority of sub33 bikes, well that, as well as having been trhrashed as a first bike and that they are often grey imports with everything that implies.

i have bought a 98 yamaha fazer as my first big bike. im 17, with one years no claims and just payed £440 TPFT. the bike handles the restriction fairly well, as its quite grunty all round.

it is heavy though, so dont expect miracles.

overall its a good bike, takes me and my girlfriend pretty much everywhere at about 55 mpg, so i cant complain Smile.

I know someone selling a Daytona T595, Wink.

Although quoted at 102bhp, it only feels about 33, so PM me if your interested.

Believe me, it isn't.

102 is about right. 130 (roughly) is TL-R territory, yet I got shat all over by my dad's one, and 600RR's down Revett straight blew me into the weeds.

595's are nowhere near 130 brake.

Give or take a few..its quoted 128 to 149 depending on year.
Probably looking at about 120ish either way.

The TL is a twin, but chucking about 130hp. Fair play, id see the TL having a bit of an advantage either way...

on topic...the standard 500 commuters have good 33hp skills, they know the score.
Most bikes would probably cope well, bandit/sv/hornet/XJ600 etc.

Thats not too bad for that bike tbh.
Its in a state of tune i would class as unreliable though.
I dont mind the odd HP gain through an exhaust..but remapping/filters being removed and fiddling with the engine just makes me think RAC.

Fair play though, still couldnt keep up with todays 1000's but its a fair hitter. Thumbs Up

yep paddy. she goes well but nothing like his tl-r or his zx12r. but then on the twisties it will keep up with anything / be faster as its all down to the rider no 1000cc bike is going to be flat out / usign all its power especialy with half the tarts around here .

as for rac etc not yet hahaha just shit eletrics and fresh oil every 2k miles (its done 4k in 2 years) it makes a bitch of a noise and when it hits the limmiter its nice Wink haha

its had a play with a few r1 and blades etc and come off on top but id blame the riders.
