Hi all,

I'm a year-round rider and commute to work everyday.

Problem is that I can't find a pair of bike pants that'll keep my butt dry when I sit on a wet seat.

I've had four pairs of Goretex pants from 2 different manufacturers (Dainese and Hein Gericke) and all of them do the same thing.

Within 10 minutes of sitting on a wet bike seat I can feel that my arse is damp.

I sent the Dainese pair back to Gore (via Infinity) who tested them but could find no leaks.

They said that they don't guarantee against this sort of thing as the plastic seat prevents the water escaping and body heat turns the water into vapour which can get through the Goretex layer - seems ridiculous as they supposedly "guarantee to keep you dry"

I dry the seat as much as I can before I get on but when it's raining the water will find it's way underneath you anyway.

I would've bought a cheaper pair if I'd known that I'd have the same problem even with Goretex.

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and if not what pants you wear.

I have never had this problem. Maybe because all my seats have not absorbed water.

Solution

Make your seat waterproof.

Dutch army issue gore-tex overtrousers. I've used them for years and they keep me dry, even with a set of combats under them.

I long ago gave up on he search for the perfect "do everything" piece of motorcycle clothing. I wear thermals to keep warm, leathers/kevlar for protection and waterproofs to stay dry.

The seat itself doesn't absorb water as it is waterproof.

I've had the same problem on both my '03 Bandit and my current '86 CB750

Yeah I too have given up on that dream. I just want some trousers that will actually keep me dry.

I have no problem with waterproofness anywhere else, just where I'm in contact with the seat.

I've actually also got a pair of Berghaus Paclite Goretex overtrousers and even they do the same thing.

I have some 'OUTDOOR-MC' waterproof overtrousers that I got from www.getgeared.co.uk . They only have zips in the sides and so there is nowhere for water to get in on the backside area. They cost £60 IIRC and can easily be put on over jeans etc because of the leg zips.

I've had a few pairs of these too, British version as well. Cheap and do the job.

I use normal berghaus overtrousers, zip and popper up the sides, so far so good. Only thing is the bottoms ride up a bit so you get wet trouser cuffs.

One thing I do get is, a cold feeling round the crotch area, it feels like water is getting through but its not, I think its just cold rain pooling in that area then chilling the material, eventually that chill gets to your skin and it feels like cold water.

Each time though, when I get to where I'm going, I'm as dry as a bone.

Thumbs Up

I have a pair of Spada over trousers, they are fine as were the cheap ones I had before these.

Never had this issue of pants leaking from soaking up water from the seat.
You sure its not leaking down, if you have a short jacket ?

A good test would be to wear the ones that you think leak. But put a plastic bag on the seat so you are sitting on something dry. Thumbs Up

Gortex works by only allowing moisture to move in one direction ie away from you body. Now I can see what they are saying. From the point of view that because you are sat on a non breathable surface the sweat from your nether regions can't escape. But it should still get through the gortex and sit in the outside layers.
Might make you feel like its wet, but should not actually be wet.

I know what you mean about the cold crotch Shocked

However, I often wear my jeans under the trousers in the winter and the seat area is noticeably damp by the time I get to work - which is only a 25 min ride.

I just can't understand why I've had it with 4 different pairs of trousers - plus my Berghaus overtrousers - when other people don't seem to have the same problem.

Thing is I find that even if I get on a completely dry seat, by the time I get where I'm going the rain has got underneath me and the seat is wet when I get off - strange...

I know it's not sweat as it's not that sort of dampness and it happens even in really cold temperatures.

It's also not that it just feels wet as whatever I'm wearing underneath is noticeably damp when I take the trousers off.

Thanks for the input guys.

Just wanted to know if it's a common problem that people learn to put up with.

Apparently it's not Confused

cheap shit nylon waterproof over trousers work perfect! Like those Weise ones or even cheaper. Just wear biking over-trousers for warmth and protection then these over the top. Means you have to stop if starts raining on journey but 2 mins to put on.

Trouble is the weakest point of goretex etc is the stitching as the holes for the needle can be the fail point unless made correctly, guess the crotch probably has the most in one area to fail.

I hate to say, this and please don't take offense at it. But it could be possible that you have a issue with water leakage while on the move. Not uncommom if you are bounced around. Either that or because of the extra layers in the crotch area's you are sweating a lot. Certain area's of the body will sweat no matter how cold it is.

Could be related to the material your underwear is made from.....

You may not feel either of the above till you get off the bike.

Could be water is funneled to that area while on the move. You don't say what type of bike you have.
