..with all the email scanning and firewall things please?
I am fairly computer illitarate, just use it for browsing and banking (thats banking not browsing and wa.....). Currently using norton but cpu consumption is high with the ccSvsht.exe sucking most of it up and causing immense frustration. Computer runs slow because of this, discs always running at full pelt.

The computer is a Hewlet packard pavillion AMD Athalon xp1800+ 1.53 GHz 992 MB ram with microsoft XP Home edition version 2002 service pack 3.

Thanks in advance

Use linux instead of windows and never have to worry about antivirus/firewall crap again.

There are lots of sites that will tell you how to give it a try without having to make a permanant changeover.

The only good reasons I can see for using windows are for gaming or if you have to use a particular program that simply isn't available on linux.

If you just do browsing and banking, you don't need windows.

Ubuntu is the most popular version of linux and probably the most user friendly. You can burn a live CD which will let you run a simplified version of it without having to install. You can also install it to dual-boot (so you get an option of windows or ubuntu when you turn the computer on). https://www.ubuntu.com/

I bet installing ubuntu is easier than getting rid of Norton Wink

EDIT: Posted from my 11 year old Compaq Presario S4000NX with 2.4GHz celeron, 1Gb RAM, Nvidia GeForce 5200 graphics card. Running on Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope". No issues whatsoever with running speed unless using HIGHLY intensive graphics applications. Also running full-on "compiz-fusion" 3D desktop environment (I'll take the pepsi challenge with windows 7 any day).

I wonder if you could upgrade your CPU? You should be able to get a much faster one than you have for not too much money if it'll fit your motherboard.

I have this on my pc. Have done for years and never had a problem. It has caused a problem with the GFs laptop so we changed that for Avira and so far all is well.

Is it possible to run W7 in 'VirtualBox'? I have W7 pre-installed, i have a disc somewhere but not sure if it has any licenses left on it.

I'm basically the same as the OP with regards to computer use (although i do a lot of film downloading...legal of course!), is Linux still a good option?

Sorry for the thread hijack, seemed like a good idea to post in here as it is directly(ish) related!

Yes, VirtualBox supports Win7.

There is also plenty of torrent software available for Linux, if memory serves there is one included in the default installation of Ubuntu.

Installing and using linux when you don't know a lot about this stuff is probably not a wise idea.

I tried linux a while back and i had no clue how to do stuff or how to install things etc.
Think it was black box or something.. can't remember but when my friend was showing me he was using an awful lot of command line stuff and there's no way in hell i can remember all that... i don't even want to to be honest. I did that with DOS when i was young. Now i just want easy stuff Razz

Is ubunto the same or is it more windows like. I mean for installing and running things.

For antivirus i've use F-Secure and Avira with no problems Smile

In Ubuntu you can get away with never using the command line. It has a program called Synaptic Package Manager. Basically you type in what you want in a search box at the top and it finds a suitable application. You then 'mark' it to install then click apply.

I find it's much easier than Windows because you're not searching for a 'convert AVI to MP4' program on Google and being shown loads of shit programs that make you register and pay to get the full features. The only thing I can liken it to is installing things on Android Market, except everything is free.

I've been playing about with dual booting ubuntu also, on an old laptop.
I like how you can now install it almost like any other application and it creates a virtual disc rather than having to actually burn it to a disc or USB stick.
https://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer

When I previously tried it 5 or more years back it was off-putting as mentioned above with command prompts needed, and changing the boot order to a disc, rather than just selecting one or the other as it boots.
The desktop is not that different to windows - or at any rate as a long term windows user I found no problems getting most stuff I use working.

I used to use Ubuntu, but nowadays I use PCLinuxOS, it may have an unfortunate name, lol, but it's a rolling release so I much prefer it.

That being said I may try Linux Mint, Debian edition soon.

Or for the toal novice. There is the "Add or Remove Applications" box which just gives you the name of the application and a description of what it does. You check the box and click add, it does everything else for you.

Even synaptix can seem a bit daunting for a newbie. It sometimes asks questions of you that you may not know the answer to. (although I generally find with linux, it's best to agree with it on the whole unless you know different).

My mate got a fecking stinker of a virus, ive got the computer here to fix, he had spybot and avg and still got feckered. Don't get me wrong im not sure how often he ran spybot but AVG was always on.

After speaking to spybot they think its a rootkit, it wont allow any anti-virus/anti-spyware to be installed or ran.

start simple.. task manager and shut all unusual processes down (taking note of them). uninstall EVERYTHING that isn't essential and go from there

i would recommend linux mint over ubunutu. basically the same but mint has some added extras like flash, java etc already built in.

to answer your question though. have tried many. often find myself switching between different anti-virus when they release a new version. currently using avast! currently using 0%CPU and 2MB of RAM

I've not tried that one. Is it debian based too?

These days with ubuntu it's pretty much just a case of installing the restricted extras package to get all those applications working. All the non-free DVD and audio codecs and flash software is bundled together in a single package. Click and install.

That said, I wasn't terribly impressed with the latest version of Ubuntu. It was a lot less flexible so I went back to Jaunty. Better for a total novice I'd have said but slightly annoying for someone who'se got used to using the previous versions. Horrible for a full-on linux geek but they wouldn't be using something like ubuntu anyway.
