Fitting Heated Grips to a Bike With 6V Electrics

Is this going to work?

I ordered a set of the rather cheap heated grips that G mentioned in another thread. I thought I would fit them to my brother's bike and see if they were any good, then if they were buy a set for me.

However I just thought his bike is a H100 which has a 6 volt electrical system. If I fit these will they still work but sort of not as well?

Years ago I had an H100, the electrics were barely able to power the candle of a headlight.


So I made a set of heated grips out of printer ribbon cable. They just about got warm. Ish. But headlight was even dimmer.

You would probley get some heat runing them at 6 volts but it would be very little and you would,nt be able to feel it through your gloves.


Only options you,ve got to get them to work fully is to use a 6-12v step up transformer if you can get hold of one or convert the bikes charging system to 12 volts which would require rewinding of the stator plus a new battery (or capatictor if no battery is used) and a new regulator/rectifier.

Honda H100, the old two-smoke?
Did my 'Part 1' test on one of them
If it had been a CB100 or older CG with Honda parts-bin interchangeability might have been FAIRLY straight forward to upgrade to 12v electrics, but on the two-stroke, suspect finding compatible rotor & back-plate may be a bit more awkward.
Though not entirely un-do-able....
Whether it would be worth the effort or not is another matter entirely.

Probably your BEST option is to go for a total loss system.

Simply wire the grips to a seperate battery, and re-charge it over-night.

I'd probably go for a sealed 'alarm' battery from Maplins, as they tend to be cheaper than Gel-Cels & give better mounting options.

If my leftover physics knowledge is correct, at half the voltage you'll be getting one-quarter the output power. So they may be just enough to stave off frostbite, but they won't be "warm".

Now am I seeing that correct? Three quid plus two quid postage? Get in.
