Hey

I'm selling a 2005 FZ6n for 2500 and I have been offered a blue 1998 R1 with 13,000 miles. The bike is like new.

I was originally selling the FZ6 to buy a bike to use in the winter so I don't ruin the VFR, but an R1 could be fun...

What would you do if it was you in this situation?

Stock jokes aside, you should be able to get an early R1 for a fair bit less than that (well, could last winter), but may not be 'like new' (though I bet it's not!)
Not sure what your bike is actually 'worth'. Second hand prices haven't really gone down over the last year as they normally would with age, but don't think they've gone up much either.

Based on my research evaluating motorbike sales/pricing markets, mainly based on ebay Yamaha R1 is the bike who looses most of the value when being sold in winter or around the winter time. Basically R1's can be cheaper then R6 and they are.

Even if its gleaming its really only worth around £1900 tops imo. Always seem to be a lot of price hiking on r1's and r6's.

The FZ6 is worth more, so if the only reason you'd be swapping is to make a buck on the re-sale then don't bother. If you just want a more bonkers bike, cant be arsed with the process of selling your current bike and don't mind loosing out on a few bob when it comes to selling the thou... well that's your decision.

Also, it may look "as new" and have relatively low mileage but it could be a track bike that the owner has re-clothed with the stock fairings for a sale, or just generally been shagged / wheelied on the odd sunny Sunday. Be careful and have a very close and critical look at the bike itself / it's paperwork / it's service & MOT history before pulling the trigger.

Spoke to a couple of dealers recently who said they would take more or less any late model bike from a decent manufacturer but flat refuse to take Fazers on PX because nobody wants them. You're obviously finding the same trying to sell yours privately.

If the R1 is as you describe, I'd swap it for that reason. In that condition, you should get £2.5k any day. However, I very much doubt it is anywhere near perfect, and that kind of mileage must come with some serious backup (all MOTs, FSH etc.). Even then, nothing to say the owner(s) haven't disconnected/swapped clocks between MOTs.

I'd look over the whole thing very very carefully before comitting, check all the paperwork, and do a full HPI check. All being kosher, though, it would be a great bike to have.

I'd look at it the other way around.... why would the R1 owner think he was getting a good deal swapping his R1 for your fazer?

Theres only a few of reasons I can think of.

The first is he doesn't want to run a gleaming sportsbike through the winter.... & wants a 'hack'.... but if the 'hack' is as valuable as the R1, then its not really a 'hack' is it? So I think we can discount that one.

Next, the R1's phucked. Been smashed, or thrashed, & re-dressed, or something, or its just started clonking or missing on gear-changes pointing to impending doom or similar.

Next is they have scared themselves stupid, put thier licence in jepordy, or realised cramped sportsbikes cause back-pains etc. & having had thier summer fun, and looking at colder weather, 'just' want something a bit more 'sensible'.

So three options, two of them are not so great for you, one neutral.

I'd say you have about a one in three chance of NOT being stuffed on this deal...........

Want a cheaper bike to do mileage on also seems a good reason.

Thinks that the Fazer may actually be easier to sell with winter coming.

Know someone that wants a Fazer.

My plan is to spend half the money on a enduro bike for the winter and some dirty fun and the other half will go towards a new kitchen.

Personally I think something like an SV650 would be more suited to the winter than an R1
