Picked up a Renault 5 Rio about 2 weeks ago.
It was a tidy little 1.1, 69k miler from 1987.
Gave it a service, got it running sweet, returns 440 miles to £40 of petrol. Sorted.
Then I got the GTT bug, and started buying bits...
It started out like this..

Currently stands like this...
https://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac227/pitbikeben/Photo1911.jpg
Been getting busy with the grinder and a tub of Pon to skim off the marks on the doors.
Had to remove all the little posts that the Campus/Rio door trims clipped on to.

Drove to Portsmouth tonight and picked up another front bumper. a Stock GT Turbo one this time, as apposed to that nasty K-Tec racing POS thats currently fitted.
Once the body work is all done, I'll be fitting GTT brakes on the front, and maybe a GTT rear beam, although the rear drums dont bother me, It'd be for visual reason only if I was to swap...
Once the brakes are done, I've a nice 1.7 engine sat in my garage waiting to go in, just needs the belts doing and a service.
Engine came out of a Volvo 340. Will drop straight in more or less.
Cant wait.

How did I know as soon as I opened this thread that the nice standard 5 would end up barried to death? ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

I dont know whether I should admit to this, but I owned 9 Renault 5 GTT Turbo's over a 6 year period in the late 90's early 00's!
They are like little go-carts, wicked little motors! ____________________ ZXR750R (M2) - For the road.

Yes, seriously handling was fine on them, back stepped out easy if you let off the throttle in the wet though. But fit a strut brace and it was like a totally different car.
The GTT did have different suspension to the others though, so handling is totally different to the non-gtt. ____________________ ZXR750R (M2) - For the road.

The wheels ruin it, even then I think the Turbo kit ruins it, looked like quite a tidy little runabout for someone.
What I do find slightly amusing though, is that you have used filler and primer on the car for repair work, nothing wrong with that all, you obviously have holes to fill and corrosion to sort out, but what makees me chuckle is the age old mistake of doing the repair work then not covering it in paint, then using/letting the car/repairs to get wet, completely forgetting filler and primer are porous so soak water in, rendering the completed job pointless.
I have never understood why people do this? If you are planning on doing body work, at least buy a tin of similar colour paint, or the correct colour paint to touch it in and stop water being soaked into the repair |

Each to their own ay.
I fitted a strut brace today, Handling is better. Just eying up some Spax adjustable dampers for it.
Picking up some GTT vented disks and calipers at the weekend.
Makes me laugh that people think I'm chaving this car up. I'm making it look like a near stock GTT, Just with a better engine.
Pits, The car is kept in a garage, It's not really been wet since I skimmed the lower doors.
Doesn't matter what the finish is like, as long as it's smooth. Bottom of the doors are getting vynal wrapped anyway.
Drove to Portsmouth last night, picked up a Genuine Renault GTT Bumper, it's yellow, so will be getting it sprayed at some point.
Also got another GTT seat as one of mine had started to collapse.
Also got a heater matrix out of a Rover Mini to go in it. Much lighter and more compact than the big leaky one that was in there previous.
I only want an "on/off" button. Dont need temp control or anything. If I want cold air I have a sunroof and side windows.
The new motor which is going in once I've got the rest of the parts I need.
Can turbo it too which will return a good power figure. Engine is 83hp / 98lbft.
Adding the turbo gubbins from the Volvo 400 series can push it up to around 130bhp.

The most noteworthy thing I can remember about the R5GTT was they liked to convert them selves into road-side BBQ's, Carburettor full of fuel above the exhaust manifold Great idea They fitted a cooling fan but being French and having to deal with harsh conditions they gave up easily.
That said, I really did want one in my old mk1 clio |

This is the engine you want .
Probably wouldn't be an easy conversion, but I'm sure that somebody must have done it. The 21 used the infamous UN1 gearbox, so would probably be a PITA mating it to the standard 5 transverse 'box.
I've driven loads of R5 turbos (and 9/11/21 turbos), and i remember them being good fun, probably because I owned 1.0 cars in them days though.
Why didn't you just buy a GTS though?
PS. The 'proper' Turbo posted by Mistergixer is . I think I've only ever seen one, that was about 10 years ago and that was for sale. |

For those who are interested, The R5 is coming along nicely.
Fitted the black vinyl to the passenger side, just gotta do the drivers side now.
Got another tail gate trim, will be removing the badges on it, filling the holes, and spraying red. Then replacing my tailgate trim as I cant get the GT Turbo badge off my one.
Been having a look into the 5. It seems that the conversion I am doing will basically make it a Renault 5 GTE.
It was a European car originally. Fitted with the GT Turbo kit, and a 1.7 F2N engine.
Sources show it producing between 90bhp and 104bhp depending on the source. And roughly 90lb-ft.
Anyway, Last night i picked up a GT Turbo front end. Steering rack, Subframe, lower arms, shocks, drive shafts, hubs, brakes, servo etc.
Also picked up all the interior trimmings.
Will be building the 1.7 up onto the subframe, then when it's done, I can lift the shell off the current subframe and onto the new one.

Then gave it a little polish today at work...
