Just had a crash on an icy roundabout.

Approached the roundabout in the right hand lane, slowed down a fair bit so I was going about 15-20mph as I entered it. Leaning left a little and the bike washed out from under me, slid on its LHS for about 10m with me not far behind. As I got off I noticed the middle of the road which looked defrosted was actually a sheet of black ice. As I was parked up waiting for a tow truck 4 more cars slid on the ice and spun across the road to varying degrees. One mounted the roundabout and is in the second photo.

Two blokes in a van and a 4x4 stopped to give me a hand, kudos to you good fellows .

Damage is:

Snapped mirror stem.
Scuffs to front and rear indicators
Split in fairing around crash bung
Rashed crash bung
Rash on fairing near tank
Rash on fairing near screen
Slight scuff on screen
Centre stand scuffed
Centre stand bent a tab on the exhaust so now the stand hits the chain
Leaking around the genny cover

Bruised ribs and a scuffed jacket cuff.

The weather is getting particularly shite now, i was in the car this morning and that was reading - 2.5c

Lost the back of the car very unexpectedly quite a few times since its got a lot colder, i'm being a girl and keeping the bike away for the most part right now.

It was frosty today when the GF took the kiddo to school but its beautiful out there now.

Sorry to hear about the drop but I'm sure its an easy fix. Even the Genny cover can be replaced on egay these days. Little bit of double backed sticky tape and she'll be as good as new

just be thankfull its mostly light cosmetic damage. Could have been lots worse buddy.

Cheers guys, take it easy in the mornings - it was literally invisible. As I tried to pick it back up I could barely stand because of the ice, it rained last night and froze over.


The damage doesn't seem all that bad now I've had a proper look over it. Had to cut the bolt holding the crash bung on but it iturns out the oil leak wasn't the genny cover after all. Just had it in bits and the oil on the gen cover was actually dripping from the airbox when I had it tilted to the left.

Turns out there is a crankcase breather in the airbox, this area was covered in oil and the airbox had loads of oil in it, dripping into the throttle bodies. I'm guessing when on it's LHS, the breather ends up pumping oil into the airbox.

Cleaned it out and started it up, smokey but it cleared after a few minutes.


So far the cost to fix is looking to come in around £20 for a new mirror and a few quid for a new fairing bolt. Everything else I have sorted or can live with for now.

Just got off the phone to donny, think hes narrowed the leak to the airbox, the genny cover seems safe, scratched but not leaking

edit: deleted a chunk as hes just posted the same so pointless repeating it all

Least no car was up your ass, would have been a lot more painful otherwise

Whereabouts was it? I took the car in today as the bike (1999 triumph sprint st) is costly to buy new fairings for and for the sake of being a wuss i'd rather take the car!

It could be worse mate, you could have binned it like I did today. Braking a little hard coming into Old Hall at Oulton park, final session of the day. Slippery track, got onto that wierd strip of tarmac on the side, bike slides off at XXmph with me following.

One dead Hornet. To be collected tomorrow from bloody Worcester. A quick check seemed to show a straight frame and unscathed engine but a holed tank, snapped bars and an exploded speedo (expensive).

Sprained wrist for me, otherwise fine. Currently on ice with wine and ibruprofen.

New Helmet and gloves required.



One the plus side, BKS leathers are ace, didn't feel a thing really and they are barely scratched.
