Hi guys,

So i charged my battery up took the bike for a 40 mile run and when i finished i parked the bike up for the night.
When i went to start it up this morning it was groaning away got down to end of street and it gave up. Giving me the same indication battery is dead as the other day.

So?

If i charge it up tonight and fit it in morning would it be a problem charging battery every night or would i be better running a few test then maybe replacing battery?? Though i do need it working tomorrow.

At 4am this morning i was not pleased...

Cheers
Aidan

A knackered battery is likely, it's the season for it.

Basic charging system test first. Charge the battery up first, so that you are getting 12 volts or more across the terminals with a multimeter with everything turned off. Then start the bike, and you are looking for the same or higher voltage - try with the lights on too. Then rev it up to around 4000rpm and hold it there, you should be getting around 14.5 volts, I would be happy with 13 or more on that bike.

If it's reading more like 60 volts, your reg rec is dead. If the voltage is dropping as your put more load on the engine and electrical system, it isn't charging. If you are getting some response but the numbers are lower than I say, it's the battery.

If the numbers point at battery or charging circuit, get a new battery first. Cheap and easy. If they point at reg/rec, get a new reg/rec and a new battery. Make sure you charge the new battery as instructed before fitting it to the bike, or it won't last.

Check battery, it takes 2 minutes...then you know whats up! you can order a battery online, get it shipped but you could probably get away charging it every day until the new one arrives.

I wouldn't even bother charging it, just bump it each day till you get the new one.

I'm slightly confused as for the CG I'd always thought once you got it started then the battery was out of the equation in terms of keeping it going (as running from alternator).

However, this is for the older, pre electric ignition CGs.

If started but cutting out I'd look to either a spark/HT issue or a fuelling/carburetor problem. However, if you think its the battery then run the tests Robby suggests.

Well, I rode my last CG with a dead battery for a month. It took about a meter of space to bump start it while standing next to it so I got too lazy to immediately buy a new battery.

So the battery isn't the issue really but making sure the rest of your electronics are healthy is an issue.

Once you do find it's just the battery, shell out the £15 your CG deserves Wink

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

Map it would have been that if had turned the bloody fuel on Embarassed

So as i had forgot that basic rule it wouldn't start and that was the end of it...

Had the battery on charge with oxford optimizer 600, anyone know if the battery when connected to this charger without it being plugged in would show it as being charged??

As every time i unplug it drops down to three lights as if battery needs charged!

Im thinking new battery and then see what else as bought the bike and hasn't been run much in the last year or so..

Yes, the oxford optimiser 600 thing does this, i have one, and 2 perfectly working batteries, and it does the same with them even when they're fully charged.
