As title I had a bit of a senior moment when taking off the rear wheel to fix some binding brakes. The machine has been stood for a while. Anyhow, ended up taking off the brake arm without marking its original position.

So now when everything is connected together applying the brake just locks the brake on, it doesn't release.

Any help appreciated as I can't remember the trick to set these right (so two senior moments then, Alzheimer's here we come).

Thanks in anticipation Thumbs Up

The springs on the shoes should pull the brake back off, as long as the cam isn't going through a full 90degrees and the shaft with the cam on isn't siezed solid.

Have you overtightened the brake arm so its turning the cam through 90 degrees?

[edited cause I'm a retard and wrote break]

That's what I thought Doh!. I'll whip the wheel back off when I can in daylight and check everything is where it should be and cam's working.

Any hints on putting the brake arm back in the right place appreciated. There are no marks and I'm used to them there being there. I was told how to do it once but not having to use the method I guess my memory put it into the bin.

What bike is it? Trial and error should get you pretty damn close within a couple of attempts.

Are you SURE there isn't a mark on the end of the splined shaft?

Thanks for the heads-up.
I'll check in daylight as it was dark when I came to finish up and even with the LED worklights I just could not see any score or punch marks to work from.

Presumably the purpose of stripping down your brake drum was to clean and lightly grease all of the moving parts. You did do this didn't you? I would imagine that you also would have checked the condition of the brake linings. If these were found to be serviceable then it is highly unlikely that the cam would be able to go through 90 degrees (unless the brake drum is severely worn). As for the positioning of the break arm, just do a bit of trial and error as it should only take a couple of minutes per try.

Now sorted the problem, well, 98% there Rolling Eyes

Turns out the brake camshaft wasn't as cleaned and lubricated as I thought (I'd delegated, if a jobs worth doing, etc.).

It had actually stuck at an angle. Thus giving the impression of binding brakes (because they were!) and probably allowed rotation to 90 degrees so sticking the brakes on.

Removed the camshaft, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled.

Now works fine although I need to fine tune the arm placement as the pedal travel is too much before brakes applied. I can confirm that there are no score or punch marks on the cam or the arm to assist replacement.

Thanks for the assistance.

So obviously you're going to make one when it's set up properly so you know for future... Thumbs Up
