So I got my scooter back from the garage after having a mechanic look at it for a couple of hours (100 bloody quid!) and he says it needs a head gasket replacement.

Now I basically have a ped that I have already spent too much money on and I really need to fix this myself, is it an easy job? I have some basic mechanical knowledge and all the time in the world, but can't find a manual for this scooter anywhere.

Can I do this myself, getting the top end off and buying the gasket set on ebay for about 10 quid?

it wont run and the guy i left it with tried loads of stuff with the carb and reeds etc and when he gave it back he said its probably the head gasket as he'd tried most other things, dunno what else it could be that he wouldn't have tried in 2 hours.

You can sometimes get away with not using a head gasket from scratch,( NOT recommended ) on an old field bike is the only way I would try, but if one is allready on the head & has blown ,It has to be replaced . THis said I think you should get someone who knows a bit to check it , the so called mechanic sounds dodgy & should have done a compression check to confirm its the head or rings & not just guessing for a £100 tosser Thumbs Down

Agreed, do a compression test, you can buy a cheap compression tester from eBay. Find out what it should be from Google.

If the measured reading is far below, then either it's the head gasket, or work piston/rings or work barrel.

Changing a head gasket isn't particularly difficult, especially if it's a 2 stroke. As long as you take your time, and ideally have a manual with you.
But a head gasket blowing is fairly unusual, it's more likely to be piston rings or work barrel in my opinion if compression is low.
