Looking at picking up a mg zr 1.4 mrk2 maybe on monday.. for £3k
Reading online reviews and its just people prattling on about how it's the bog standard car with a body kit etc...

So i need some good honest bikers comments about the car Wink
What to look out for, things to check etc... (main one seems to be cylinder heads from what i've read so far..)

Cheers all !

I had a Rover Coupe with the 1.6L K-series engine, its actually a pretty nice engine to drive, but mine suffered 2 head gasket failures and 2 gearboxes before it made 100k. Both are weak points, the temp gauge sensors are forever failing so most are being driven around without a working temperature gauge which probably doesn't help things. Rear arches and sills had started to rust when 5 yrs old.

An honest comment is that its a rubbish car, Almost anything is probably better and it doesn't even sound cheap at 3k.
I'd pass on it.

They're crap, my dad and sister both had one. No quicker than an 1988 pug 205 I had at the same time and wasn't as good to throw about either. Inside feels tinny, noisy and cheap. My sisters boyfriend crashed her car and it didn't hold up at all well. 3k for one, if you'll exuse me, is madness. The world is your oyster with that sort of money.

This.

For £3k you could get so much more car for your money. They are basically the same car as a '96 200, which was pretty outdated when it launched. They're cramped, unreliable and offer a no-thrills driving experience. They also drink fuel for such a small engine.

The head gasket will fail, heads don't take too well to skimming either (if they haven't warped/cracked in the first place).

Honest advice, avoid.

Why would anyone pay £3,000 for a Rover?

Pretty much what everyone else has said.

Spend £3K on a Rover in a shiny dress? Errrr, no.

I had a rover, didn't suffer head gasket failure, but you will! Shit engines in terms of reliability. Fairly punchy, but they aren't quick enough to have a mass amount of fun.

For 2.5k you can buy my supra lol.. I'll even deliver it Laughing

Plenty of decent cars around 3 grand with decent engines, none of this k series engine fuck up

You get a lot of car for your money Thumbs Up

But is is a glorified rover tbh

I was close to getting one but the head gasket is almost guaranted to go so it not worth it IMO

Plus you can get a good example private for around 2k Thumbs Up

A mate had a 120 and another had a 160. Both a waste of time. Sheep in slightly wolfish clothing with a crap interior.

For some indication of how little car that is for the money, check out Pistonheads latest SOTW.

The K series HG problem can now be resolved, relatively easily and cheaply, but £3K is still too much money, when all you end up with is a very average car.

Spend your money on something better.

wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Spend the 3k on something else. You could nearly buy an E36 M3 for that. (Well kinda lol)

Now that is some car for your money!!

Thanks guys, thats what i needed to hear, after a quick reading about the head gasket side i thought it was one of those things but after all your comments, im going to have a look at something else... as you said £3 is a lot and i dont fancy sorting the engine out a year down the road.

Tbh rover has never been one of my fav cars, but after seeing the zr it did change my mind with the half leather as well.
I'll look at a couple of others tmrw...plus i've just picked up autotrader....

Cheers ! Thumbs Up

Doesn't solve the problem at all... Friends 25 had a multi, it went, got the newer uprated MLS gasket and went again after being fitted at a garage... The K series is a ticking time bomb for HG failure.

My inlet manifold gasket went, I did give the car some abuse though..

For 3k...there's alot of cars out there. Not sure if you are into it, but there's some NA supras, Honda integra DC2, you could probably find an ok civic type r... All 3 are cheap on insurance! For an MG ZT 180+ I get quotes higher than my supra..

To be honest, i've had 4 Rovers, a couple of MG's and a freelander with a K-series engine and i've only ever changed 1x cylinder head on a 1.1L Rover 200 and that was after 90k of being murdered and raped for 2x years by a 17 year old, and i think (could be wrong) that was the only one with a rover engine instead of a k-series. I Like them, and would definately have another, The Latest MGZT190 i owned was lovely to drive, the KV6 engine pulled well and had a cracking note to it, handled well with 18's on, looked good, comfy as an old sofa even with sporty bucket seats etc - i'd even say out of all the cars i've owned including V6 vectra's, CLK's, Audi Coupe Quattros etc, the MG is the only car i actually regret selling and wish i'd kept hold of it !!

That said, 3k seems steep for one !!!

also - the radio's always seemed in a funny place on the 200's / ZR's and the seats dont go low enough for my liking, always felt i was sitting a touch too high.

I had a ZR for 7years and yes the HG failed but as long as its put together correctly, skimmed head, triple layer gasket and head pins it wont do it again it did 50 odd thou hard miles on that rebuild.
The motor is rev hungry and not for the lazy, but once its on song there is not many 1.4 cars that will catch one and they corner really well. A m8 had mine and its still going strong.

Quality control was shit not the car I knew a few of the quality inspectors at Rover and they owned Rovers as they knew they could be sorted. (and they got them cheap).Wink

The Z4 a is better car far quicker but maybe its because I dont want to damage it I dont drive it correctly, where as I didnt care in the ZR. It had soul.

Cheap motoring low insurance. cheap to buy (1000-1500)

If you like hairdresser cars, £3k will get you something a lot better than a rover.

MX-5 and MR2 would be my first choices if I were that way inclined.

My dad has one. It's slow, gutless, the suspension is rock hard but grip is poor, and bits keep dropping off it.

Slow and gutless compared to what?? i dont know many other 1.4L N/A cars that are 105+ Bhp ??

Also, i always found that with some half decent tyres on mine handled alright - not amazingly or breath taking but as good as you would expect for that style of car! obviously if you try comparing it to an out n out sports car, it's no match.

i have had many mgzr and forver 25's through my trade yard, probably had 80% with problems, mainly head gasket. 3k is waaayyy too much to pay for an MG way too much. they can be had for 1.5k in decent nick but don't expect it to last before your hit with problems. i've had immobilisers go wacky, heater units stop working, water leaking in from the doors and behind the dash... all sorts really i just auction most of them off. trouble they are, that's why they are so low in the glasses and CAP guides because they are not good news in the trade. even a well cared for example will all of a sudden throw its toys out of the pram and refuse to be a car.

rover blamed jeremy clarkson for their downfall.... i blame their rubbish motors.

the ZF is the soft top, not the ZR, its the rover 25 MG equivalent i still agree though if you did want one go for an MX-5

Not igniting an argument, but depends on which rover, one is 85 and one is 105bhp.
Ive eaten a 105hp rover 25 1.4 with my mates 1.2 polo, down to the driver...regardless of power.
I can get beaten in my car by most 2l turbos, they can drive better than me Laughing
To be fair, 1.4 rovers/mg are pretty nippy, theres no denying they are fairly sharpish up to about 70mph, 2nd gear will even take you there Laughing

Also, insurance seems abysmally high on the MG ZR at the moment in my area...

Too many people don't use full throttle and all the revs to get anything like the cars full potential. For these bods having less top end power but more low end and mid range (maybe like a diseasal) will suit them better, and they would regard anything that responds well to revs as being gutless.

All the best
